An Alliance Is Osborn In 'Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man' Trailer
The newest cartoon starring the web-swinger premieres on Disney+ on January 29
Sunday morning marked the end of What If…?, the first animated series from the current iteration of Marvel Animation, after three seasons and 26 episodes. However, it also marked one month until the studio will premiere its next series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man on Disney+. Marvel has released the first trailer. Previously a series that would be subtitled by Peter’s high school year, with Spider-Man: Freshman Year for season 1 and Sophomore Year for season 2, the series is the first for the webslinger to be aimed higher than preschoolers since the 2017 Spider-Man animated series finished a three-season run on Disney XD in October 2020.
Hinting that Marvel Animation doesn’t want to make new theme songs for series focused on specific heroes, the trailer is set to the classic theme song from the 1967 animated series composed by Paul Francis Webster and Bob Harris. We enter the series’s world through a vinyl record, as Peter gets ready for school and hit by a taxi. It’s a pretty typical school day for him, even slinking away to become Spider-Man at the sound of a police siren. It includes a rather nerve-wracking encounter with probable crush Pearl Pangan, voiced by Cathy Ang. He suits up and saves someone from getting hit by a truck, only to get dunked on for his costume by a livestreamer. He then apprehends them, turning the camera on them and declaring “Just consider it a good deed from your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.” Parker then emphasizes how he (still masked of course) is Spider-Man. Even the person he saved, which according to photo captions on Deadline is Harry Osborn, voiced by Zeno Robinson, isn’t all that impressed by the suit. However, this might prove to be quite the fateful save will no doubt catch the attention of Harry’s father Norman Osborn, aka the Green Goblin, voiced by Colman Domingo. Ever since the series was announced it’s been known that the foundation of the series is that instead of a Tony Stark or Nick Fury being Peter’s mentor, it’s Norman. He supplies a wide array of suits, many of which we’ve seen the concept art of, and the first we see in action is one based on the Future Foundation suit from the comics.

Pangan is a character more recent than the MCU iteration of Spider-Man, introduced in 2019 and is known as the water-based superhero Wave. The series logline describes Peter as “on his way to becoming a hero, with a journey unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots”. It’s Hudson Thames, who voiced Peter/Spider-Man in “What If… Zombies?” returning to the role for this series, which also features Eugene Byrd as Lonnie Lincoln, Grace Song as Nico Minoru, Hugh Dancy as Otto Octavius aka Doctor Octopus, and Paul F. Tompkins as Bentley Wittman aka The Wizard. Evoking Clark Gregg reprising his role as Phil Coulson in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon, Charlie Cox will voice this world’s variant of Matt Murdock/Daredevil, and Vincent D’Onofrio will voice its Wilson Fisk/Kingpin. From previous reporting, Unicorn, Chameleon, Scorpion, Speed Demon, Tarantula, Rhino, Butane, and Doctor Strange will also appear.
Jeff Trammell serves as head writer and executive producer on Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man while Mel Zwyer is supervising director. The series’s other executive producers are Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt. The 10-episode first season premieres on January 29, likely weekly releases. A double-release premiere has not been confirmed but the possibility is too common to go ignored.
