'Batman Ninja' Has Fun Fighting The Yakuza In Newly-Announced Sequel
All main personnel are returning for the new film
If you like Batman reinterpreted in different cultures and have forgotten that Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires aka Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios is still languishing without a release date, there’s some good news. Warner Bros. Japan has announced a sequel to the 2018 film Batman Ninja, titled Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League.
Plot details haven’t been revealed yet, but that’s being held for when Warner Bros. Japan will host a panel at Anime Expo on July 4 featuring it and Suicide Squad ISEKAI. A lot of the personnel from the previous film are returning. Koichi Yamadera will voice Bruce Wayne aka Batman once again. Animation is being done at Kamikaze Douga with its CEO and founder Junpei Misuzaki returning to direct alongside Shinji Takagi. Returning staff includes screenwriter Kazuki Nakashima, character designer Takashi Okazaki, and composer Yūgo Kanno.
In the first Batman Ninja, Batman travels back to Japan's Warring States period and defeats his rogues, including the Joker, who have become feudal lords in this era. The film from Warner Bros. Entertainment was originally released digitally in April 2018, with its physical media release the following month. It had the Japanese audio track as well as the English dub. A month after that, June 2018 saw a theatrical release in Japan with the Japanese voice cast. It received an airing on Toonami in the United States in October 2021.
The news comes as DC’s home video future hasn’t quite been laid out past the Watchmen animated adaptation announced last July at San Diego Comic-Con. Clearly that’s not coming out before Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths - Part Three, but after that, Aztec Batman aside, nothing’s been announced. It’s not explicitly been stated whether DTV films will have a contributing role in the new DC Universe, but it’s both film and animation so I’ve been leaving that possibility open. Animated theatrical films are just as likely and might supersede it.
