Byron Bowers Has Joined Marvel Studios’ 'Wonder Man'
More will be revealed in the coming weeks, but it’s nice to have another name now
Now that Marvel Studios and Disney+’s Wonder Man series has wrapped filming, the series is gearing up for some sort of formal reveal either at San Diego Comic-Con next week or D23 Expo next month. Very few cast members are known, but it seems another cast member who very well may stand on either stage has been found, and it’s Byron Bowers.
Now, it’s not known whether he will, largely due to his role not being known. It could be as small as Siân Phillips in the “73 Yards” episode from this past season of Doctor Who, but seems unlikely with such a rising profile. Bowers is a comedian whose work includes appearing on The Eric Andre Show, The Chi, and Swarm, and writing on Loiter Squad. He’s next appearing in the Apple TV+ limited series Lady In The Lake with Natalie Portman, premiering on Friday, July 19. He is also a consulting producer for the series.
Wonder Man is Simon Williams, created by writer Stan Lee and artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby introduced in 1964’s The Avengers #9 as a supervillain who inherits his father’s munitions company. Under his guidance, the company has trouble competing with Stark Industries, but he ultimately gets super strength and ion-based superpowers while working under Baron Zemo, and eventually becomes a founding member of the West Coast Avengers. With a Stark-less Stark Industries that has been out of the weapons manufacturing game since the start of the MCU, it remains to be seen how exactly Simon will be refitted.
Wonder Man is created by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest. The former will direct multiple episodes while Guest serves as showrunner, and they’re both executive producers with studio president Kevin Feige. Stella Meghie will also direct. It stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon, Demetrius Grosse as his brother Eric, and Ben Kingsley, reprising his role as Trevor Slattery from Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi, reportedly along with Ed Harris, Josh Gad, and Lauren Glazier.
