DC Watches The Crisis In Announcing Next Year's Direct-To-Video Movies
Owl be watching on as many Earths as possible
In the chaos of the Warner Bros. Discovery era, the one aspect that seems to be completely untouched by the new management, strangely enough, is the DC Universe Animated Original Movies that began in 2007 with Superman: Doomsday. A healthy output that’s typically three films a year. And as announced on Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con, there’s no sign of stopping.
Two of next year’s direct-to-video films were announced: Watchmen and Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths. Watchmen by Alan Moore was a very influential story that changed the popular view of comic books as low art aimed at children, presenting complex stories aimed at adult readers. It’s unknown if it will be a direct adaptation of the original story, which has already been adapted to film by Zack Snyder in 2009 and to television by Damon Lindelof on HBO in 2019, or a story set within the universe instead. The logos for both films were unveiled during the panel.
Crisis On Infinite Earths was the first major comics event in the American industry, which had condensed an unruly DC multiverse. The story was first adapted for the Arrowverse crossover aired in December 2019 and January 2020 that established every live action film and television adaptation as part of an entangled multiverse. It’s believed that this animated adaptation, first rumored in December 2021 and reported a year later, will do the same for DC’s 80+ year history in animation dating back to the Fleischer Studios Superman shorts. Like The Flashpoint Paradox, Crisis On Infinite Earths isn’t quite a Justice League story (the Arrowverse miniseries has the team formed at the end of it) but gets it slapped on for the name recognition.
It is unknown if this will bring a close to the current continuity of the Animated Movie Universe, the Tomorrowverse, which started with Superman: Man of Tomorrow in 2020. It continues with Justice League: Warworld, releasing this Tuesday, July 25. A new clip for that has also been released.
