Why does Coco need a sequel 12 years after the original when title character has already been properly memorialized? Who knows, but Disney CEO Bob Iger announced it at the studio’s annual shareholders meeting. “While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure,” he said “And we can’t wait to share more soon.” Director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina, as well as producer Mark Nielsen return.

Remember how in February, Disney announced during its year-end company earnings call they’d be laying off about 7,000 employees? Well, boss Bob Iger confirmed it would be starting this week, in the first of three rounds.
The original film saw 12-year-old Miguel, voiced by Anthony Gonzalez, dream of becoming a musician in the face of his family’s generations-old ban on music because it was believed his grandfather abandoned the family for his music career. He goes to the vibrant Land of the Dead to learn what really happened. The film won Best Animated Feature, paraphrased where applicable, at the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs and Critics Choice awards. The film’s song “Remember Me” victoriously doubled up the wins, taking home Best Original Song at the Oscars and Critics Choice Awards. The cast also includes Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Alanna Ubach, Ana Ofelia Murguía, Sofía Espinosa, and Jaime Camil, who posted about the film to his Instagram as well.
