Disney Dates And Windows Its Upcoming 'Zootopia', 'Toy Story' And 'Frozen' Sequels
And the upcoming 'Alien' movie gets its subtitle
It was a busy first quarter earnings call for Disney CEO Bob Iger. Not only did he reveal the transformation of the Moana Disney+ series into a full-blown sequel film coming this November, but he confirmed the renewal of Percy Jackson and the Olympians for a second season and those…Swifter things. On top of that, he laid out when some previously announced sequels would be released.
It was in fact last February’s earnings call that the Zootopia sequel, Frozen III and Toy Story 5 were announced, and now we have an idea as to when they’ll be released. First, the Zootopia sequel will take the traditionally-held Thanksgiving slot that Moana 2 holds this year, and Wish, Strange World, Encanto, and the previous Moana and Frozen films have held in the past, among many others. In this case, it’s a November 26, 2025 release date. In fact, it’s Moana being in the slot in 2016 that kept the original Zootopia out of it, and released in March instead. Frozen III and Toy Story 5 have both been given 2026 releases. While not officially placed in that November slot or mid-June, the latter being a very Pixar-friendly spot, respectively, don’t be surprised if they land there.
This past November, Iger talked about not only the third Frozen being worked on, but developing a fourth film as well, saying “Frozen III is in the works, and there might be a Frozen IV in the works too. But I don’t have much to say about those films right now. [Director] Jenn Lee, who created the original Frozen and Frozen 2, is hard at work with her team at Disney animation on not one but actually two stories.” All three most recent entries, plus Toy Story 3 and the original Frozen, have made over a billion dollars and these new entries build a hope that they can put butts back in seats as has been a recent struggle. The vastness of Toy Story and Frozen as franchises is well-documented. Zootopia only recently built momentum with the Emmy-winning Zootopia+ series in 2022 and Zootopia Land at Shanghai Disney Resort with its flagship Zootopia: Hot Pursuit ride opening at the end of 2023.
Elsewhere, 20th Century Studios and Fede Alvarez’s Alien installment is now known as Alien: Romulus. The synopsis reads “Young people from a distant world must face the most terrifying life form in the universe”. It stars early Supergirl candidate Cailee Spaeny and actual Hawkgirl Isabela Merced, as well as Aileen Wu, Spike Fearn, David Jonsson and Archie Renaux. Alien: Romulus is still on track to be released this August 16 in theaters.
