Disney+'s Stan Lee Documentary Has A Release Date
The documentary has been produced in celebration of the Marvel icon's 100th birthday
Excel-see-more! Marvel has announced the premiere date for Stan Lee, the documentary about the man, the writer who rose through the ranks to become editor-in-chief, president, and eventual icon. After a premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, it will premiere on Disney+ on June 16.
While there’s been no disclosed significance to the release date, the documentary’s announcement occurred in December, on Lee’s 100th birthday, something this project also commemorates. Lee, who died in 2018, created many of Marvel’s characters that debuted in the ‘60s and ‘70s, such as Iron Man, Black Panther, Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Thor, Ant-Man, The Wasp, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, the Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, and Nick Fury. Lee also formed The Avengers.
This isn’t the first documentary about him, as With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story was released in 2010. Stan Lee has the advantage to talk about the final 8 years of his life, even if a bit generalized. There’s also the fact that characters he created, whether they were more obscure at the time or generally known but still loved at somewhat normal levels that have exploded in exposure and popularity in the last 13 years. The way people view Marvel as a company has also shifted drastically since the last documentary thanks to shifts in both the film industry and the comics industry. To put it in perspective, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was only halfway through Phase One when With Great Power was released, and now titles are known through Phase Six in 2026. What better way to show how his legacy has been solidified? It will certainly be interesting to see the approach Stan Lee takes in comparison to With Great Power, and how it uses the new material and details the old.
