'Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.' Canceled After 2 Seasons On Disney+
The 'Doogie Howser' reimagining starring Peyton Elizabeth Lee dropped its second season in March
This was one bad house (of mouse) call. Disney+ has canceled Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. after two seasons. Disney’s opting not to pick up the series for a third season comes after the second released in March.
Doogie Kameāloha, M.D., a Hawaii-set reimagining of 1989–1993’s Doogie Howser, M.D. starring Neil Patrick Harris, starred Andi Mack’s Peyton Elizabeth Lee as teen doctor Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha. She is nicknamed after her predecessor, as the show exists in-universe, as overtly pointed out by one of her colleagues, Dr. Lee played by Ronny Chieng, in the show’s first episode.
In addition to Chieng, the show’s supporting cast included Kathleen Rose Perkins as Lahela’s mom and boss Dr. Hannon, Jason Scott Lee as Lahela’s dad Benny, Matt Sato and Wes Tian as her brothers Kai and Brian Patrick, Emma Meisel as her best friend Steph, and Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman and Mapuana Makia as two of her coworkers Charles and Noelani. Some of the notable guest stars included included Barry Bostwick, Randall Park, Magic Johnson, Margaret Cho, Daniel Dae Kim, Alyson Hannigan, and Max Greenfield.
The series, created and executive produced by Kourtney Kang, premiered in September 2021, with weekly releases until November. The second season however, heavily featuring a love triangle story with love interests played by Alex Aiono and Milo Manheim, dropped all 10 episodes on March 31, 2023, nearly a year and a half after the first, and two weeks after Howser arrived on the service. Aiono played a surfer bro named Walter, while Manheim’s Nico was newly introduced as one of Lahela’s patients with leukemia. The little marketing the season got had a heavy focus on the romance and that may have turned people off.
Unfortunately, similar to the reputation Netflix has gotten, Disney+ series have been very few and far between to get beyond 2 seasons. Many of them aren’t even on the service anymore after the May culling. Only The Mandalorian and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which got a jump as launch titles, have gotten third seasons released, with the latter having released its fourth and final season earlier in August. Star Wars: The Bad Batch and Marvel’s What If…? have been renewed through season three, the final for the former, but have not been released yet. The Bad Batch season 2 released earlier this year while What If…? still hasn’t premiered its second season.
