The 'Deeply Affecting' Final Episodes Of 'Doom Patrol' Start Arriving On Max Next Month
See? Nothing to worry about
While seasons 4A of long-traveled, semi-related live action DC series Titans and Doom Patrol were very much in tandem late last year, with the latter following the former as they each aired 6 episodes over five weeks from November to January. However, Titans aired in the same manner over April and May in the same way, except Doom Patrol was nowhere to be found. Two months later the worry was starting to set in for series star Michelle Gomez, who has starred as Laura De Mille aka former Brotherhood of Evil member Madame Rouge since season 3. Now, episode 7 director Bosede Wiliams spoke with Entertainment Weekly, who ended the piece by revealing that the final episodes, which they were revealed to be weeks after the first half aired, begin releasing in October.
When the season left off, the Doom Patrol was sent to an unnatural pocket dimension called Orqwith, filled with architecture made of bones, as they risk having their life forces sapped away. "The show creator [Jeremy Carver] really wanted to present Orqwith to the fans, because they've been talking about it since season 1," Wiliams recounted." “We knew that it should be dark and completely disorienting, because the characters have never seen anything like it. It should be gloomy, just to really take them out of their elements."
The team, consisting of Robotman, voiced by Brendan Fraser and suit acted by Riley Shanahan, Jane, played by Diane Guerrero, Rita played by April Bowlby, Cyborg played by Joivan Wade, and Negative Man voiced by Matt Bomer and physically portrayed by Matthew Zuk when wrapped in bandages and wearing prosthetic makeup when not in bandages, come from across time and are tied together by their long lived experiences. But in Orqwith, the villain Immortus has shown they can be stripped of their longevity. These episodes will see them deal with such loss. "They are deeply affected," Williams continued. "It's a real turning point for every single character. It's a massive thing that they're going to be struggling with, and some of them are conflicted. Some of them are okay with that and want to move on, but then others are not so sure."
Even with their longevity gone, they’ve still got allies in the fight, with a returning Dorothy, played by Abi Monterey, and continued appearances of the just-introduced Casey Brinke, played by Madeline Zima, in the Silver Age hero’s first TV iteration. Williams describes them as "beacons of light” and believes such is necessary for the show Doom Patrol is, about trauma and dysfunction. “But Casey evokes a simpler time” he says. They bring the brightness, and it's really nice to see them come running in when they do."
The show will also continue to experiment with its format in the home stretch, having its own “Changing Channels” or “The One Where We’re Trapped In TV”, where following their escape from Orqwith, the team is interrupted by meta '60s TV talk show-like segments. It’s that sort of fun Williams and the fans love and can expect when Doom Patrol returns some Thursday in October on Max.
