'Dragon Ball Daima' Sets Premiere Date, Releases Official Trailer
Toriyama’s final 'Dragon Ball' project welcomes you to the demon realm
It was at New York Comic-Con on last October 12 that Toei announced their next series in the beloved Dragon Ball franchise, Dragon Ball Daima. Having been announced for fall 2024, it is very apparent that production faced no significant delays, even with the death of franchise creator Akira Toriyama’s death in March at the age of 68. In fact, it’ll be just about a year as the series has been given a premiere date of Friday, October 11 at 11:40 JST with a special 40-minute episode. The main trailer has been released, as well as information on supporting characters (this round) and even the theme song, which surprisingly includes a familiar name to American audiences regardless of franchise familiarity.
The trailer begins with a mysterious spell and a glimpse of the demon realm. Goku, voiced once again by Masako Nozawa, and Supreme Kai, voiced by Yumiko Kobayashi, have been made small through a “conspiracy”. This even affects familiar characters like Vegeta, Piccolo, Yamcha, Puar, Oolong, Android 18, Marron, Chichi, Bulma, Trunks, Goten, Good Buu, Mr. Satan, Krillin, and Master Roshi. How sidelined are they? We’ll have to wait and see. The duo are joined by new characters Glorio, voiced by Koki Uchiyama, and Panzy, voiced by Fairouz Ai, for the new adventure. A Supreme Kai lookalike is also seen, a woman with a mysterious smile, and plenty of the Demon Realm’s creatures. And of course there’s actiony fights and power displays. Couldn’t have a trailer without Goku going Super.
The second poster officially reveals Panzy, who was wearing a mask and cloaked in the previous poster, Gomah and a new mysterious character peering over the edge. The tagline has changed from “Welcome to the Great Adventure!” to “Welcome to the Demon Realm!!”, something also present in the trailer. The three new cast members each put out statements. Kobayashi said “Dragon Ball is a series that changed my life, so to simply be able to audition for it made me so excited I said to myself ‘I have no more regrets!’ I never expected to be chosen for a role and I’m genuinely scared this might all be a dream. I’m sure Dragon Ball Daima will offer people the experience of a great adventure they’ll never forget. Please stay tuned!” Uchiyama and Ai have also released statements which can be read below.
As for that theme song, it’s “Jaka Jaan” by Zedd feat. C&K, which Zedd composed for the series. Yes, that Zedd, of “Clarity” fame (with Foxes on vocals), which won him a Grammy for Best Dance Recording. He also did “Stay” by Alessia Cara and “The Middle” by Maren Morris, and was featured on Ariana Grande’s “Break Free”. After releasing his first album in 9 years, this is his first theme song composition and it is for a franchise he has loved since childhood. He said in a statement “I was incredibly honored to even be considered to produce the music for Dragon Ball. I grew up such a big fan, and I never thought I would ever be able to work on something like that. I have always aspired to write theme songs and score music. Composing music for something that influenced many of my childhood years is an absolute dream.” The song’s lyricist is franchise veteran Yukinojo Mori, who has previously brought “CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA” and “Limit Break x Survivor.” Zedd requested the song have lyrics like his hits do, and so to sing it C&K, Clievy and Keen, have brought their “overwhelming vocals” and “genre-transcending musical sense” to the piece. Their statements can be read below as well
Watch the trailer below. English or any international release plans have not been laid out yet. By all indication the Friday night slot it premieres in will be its regular.
