Emily Hampshire And Kerry Condon To Bring Humanity To E.D.I.T.H. And F.R.I.D.A.Y. On Marvel’s Vision Series
It’s time, the programs are getting with the program
It’s time to have a talk, interface to interface. Last week, scooper DanielRPK had begun a new round of casting news for Marvel Studios’s upcoming Disney+ miniseries once known as Vision Quest, official title still unconfirmed starring Paul Bettany reprising his role as Vision, by reporting that Emily Hampshire, best known as Stevie Budd on Schitt’s Creek, would be playing playing the sophisticated artificial intelligence E.D.I.T.H., the Tony Stark-created augmented reality security and defense system. That was followed up this week by reports that Kerry Condon would be reprising her role as F.R.I.D.A.Y., Tony’s successor AI after JARVIS became Vision. Both were initially reported to be human manifestations in some fashion. But so far, as of Wednesday, Hampshire’s casting was confirmed by the bigger trades, though Variety called it unclear whether it would be the human form. So I’m making an executive decision to deem the Condon reprisal as true. Why would one but not the other?
E.D.I.T.H., which stands for “Even Dead, I’m The Hero”, debuts in Spider-Man: Far From Home, bequeathed by Tony Stark posthumously to Peter Parker, played by Tom Holland, as Stark had just sacrificed his life to defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. Peter controls E.D.I.T.H. through a pair of high-tech sunglasses, which, after some confidence-shaking first tries at using the tech, he gives to the film’s villain, Quentin Beck aka Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, whom he befriended before learning his true nature. Peter would ultimately retrieve them at the end of the film. The glasses are confiscated after Peter’s identity as Spider-Man is revealed to world in the next film Spider-Man: No Way Home, leaving E.D.I.T.H.’s ultimate fate unresolved. Following the memory wipe spell, Parker disposed of Stark Industries-provided amenities in regards to his suit and arsenal, probably believing the permissions no longer existed for him to use them and that doing so would get him branded as a thief.
Marvel’s Vision Series Casts T’Nia Miller As Jocasta
A casting director has cast a Jocasta. T’Nia Miller has been cast as Jocasta in Marvel Studios’s upcoming Disney+ series about Vision, played for the fifth live-action time by Paul Bettany. The series, whose title has still not been confirmed, continues the synthezoid/android’s story following his resurrection in
Hampshire’s earliest work is episodes of Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark?, with plenty of Canadian work to follow, including voicing Alyson on Braceface and recurring on Rookie Blue. While she is best known as Stevie Budd on Schitt’s Creek, there’s probably a significant American audience that knows her sooner as Jennifer Goines on Syfy’s 12 Monkeys series, which was created by Terry Matalas, making the Vision series he’s showrunner on a reunion for the pair.
F.R.I.D.A.Y. was first installed for the climactic Battle of Sokovia in Avengers: Age of Ultron, before being used for both the airport battle and the clash against Captain America Steve Rogers in Captain America: Civil War, to helping Spider-Man in Avengers: Infinity War to the point of losing contact with Tony when he exited Earth’s atmosphere while in the Q-ship. She helps discover time travel and activates the Barn Door protocol in Endgame and checked Tony’s vitals a couple of times, including his going critical as he died. And since we haven’t quite been with the Stark family since his death, and Armor Wars hasn’t come to fruition, we don’t know what’s gone on with F.R.I.D.A.Y..
These days, Condon is best known for recurring as Stacey Ehrmantraut on Better Call Saul or Molly Sullivan on later-era Ray Donovan but starred on HBO series Rome (as Octavia) and Luck. Her other film credits include Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Banshees of Inisherin, and the upcoming F1. She was most recently seen as Fara in 5 episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
In addition to Bettany, The Blacklist star James Spader will be returning as Ultron for the first time since Vision destroyed him on his second day of life in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Faran Tahir reprises his role as Ten Rings member Raza, who first appeared and died in Iron Man. Todd Stashwick plays a (likely SWORD-hired) assassin on Vision’s trail to retrieve the technology he possesses in his composition, while Ruaridh Mollica plays Tucker, though further DanielRPK reports say he’s Tommy Maximoff? T’Nia Miller was recently reported to play Jocasta, who, while Ultron’s built bride in the comics (with the help of a brainwashed Hank Pym) was one of the other Vision replacement candidates, though at the time it was likely a throwaway Easter egg. Matalas has also been listed to direct episodes, alongside Christopher J. Byrne, who also directed episodes on 12 Monkeys as well as American Gods and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Vincenzo Natali, known for his work on The Peripheral and Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. Filming is set to conclude this month for a 2026 premiere.
