Max on Max on Max on Max, oh what a lovely prequel of a day. Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service has announced that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will head its way next Friday, August 16.
Week-in-advance announcements for theatrical slate homecomings have become the norm over at Max. It marks a 12-week theatrical run that began in the United States on May 24. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which moved two weeks earlier so it could start earning quicker while not having to open up directly against Furiosa, lasted equally as long before arriving on Hulu and Disney+ on August 2. Furiosa will have waited two weeks fewer than Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire but match Wonka’s wait. While well-received both at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival, where it received a seven-minute standing ovation, and general audiences, it struggled at the global box office, barely making a profit with a $172.8 million gross against a budget of $168 million. It seems to have affected future directions of the franchise.
Young Furiosa (here played by Anya Taylor-Joy) is abducted from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great biker horde led by the warlord Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth. Riding through the Wasteland, they encounter the Citadel, presided over by the Immortan Joe, played by Lachy Hulme. What ensues is the two tyrants fighting for dominance, and so soon finds herself in a nonstop battle to make her way home.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was directed by George Miller and also stars Alyla Browne as even younger Furiosa, John Howard, Angus Sampson, Tom Burke, George Shevtsov, Charlee Fraser, Josh Helman, Nathan Jones, and Hemsworth’s wife Elsa Pataky in multiple roles.
