Max Hosts 'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire' For July 4 Romp
Monkey fights abound this Independence Day, because that’s the American way
Netflix may have just started streaming the highly acclaimed and Oscar-winning Toho Godzilla film Godzilla Minus One after quite a long wait, but Legendary and Warner Bros.’s own Monsterverse had its own recent release, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and it’s definitely taking a shorter route home. After digital releases on May 14 and physical on June 11, Max has announced the film will start streaming for Independence Day, July 4.
It is unclear if there is a thematic match, but the week-ahead notice matches that of both Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Dune: Part Two, a film I admittedly botched coverage of, especially with its trailers as it became the now-second-highest grossing film of the year. For Godzilla x Kong, which opened theatrically March 29, it will have taken 97 days to reach Max. Which being a Thursday means it’s a day short of being two weeks longer than it took Wonka. It’ll probably take Barbie-level numbers to get a Barbie-size hold. However, like Barbie, the release will be accompanied by an American Sign Language version exclusive to the streamer, produced with ASL performer Otis Jones. It caps a box office run at $196 million domestically off an $80 million opener, which is second highest in the series. Box office eventually totaled $567 million worldwide.
The sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong saw the two icons of monsterdom living separate lives, King Kong residing in the Hollow Earth while Godzilla fights off enemies and naps in Rome’s Colosseum. However, that balance is disrupted when Kong, yearning for a cure to his loneliness, discovers a violent clan of massive apes hiding out in Hollow Earth. Led by the ruthless Scar King, the apes attack Earth, and Godzilla and Kong are the only creatures who can fend them off to defeat. Directed by the returning Adam Wingard, the film’s human cast was led by Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Dan Stevens.
The next film in Legendary’s Monsterverse is already in the works, with Grant Sputore directing and carryover of plot elements in flux with David Callaham writing.
