Jim Carrey Returning For 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3'
The legendary comedic actor had been mulling retirement during the previous film’s press tour. More cast has also been announced
Well at least we now know Dr. Robotnik knows how to survive great falls. Jim Carrey is confirmed to be reprising his role as Sonic the Hedgehog’s archenemy in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which is still on track for release in December.
This comes after Carrey, known for such films as Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty, and A Christmas Carol, spent a significant part of the previous film’s press tour in 2022 mulling retirement, saying he was “fairly serious” about leaving acting behind. He elaborated “Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious. It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.” Of course the second film left it open-ended whether Robotnik’s fall from his giant robot was actually fatal, as his body hadn’t been found, as informed just before Shadow’s was. It seems the ink was golden enough after all.
It’s also being reported that Jessica Jones’s Krysten Ritter, Furiosa’s Alyla Browne, Harley Quinn’s James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ Cristo Fernández, and The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone have been cast in the film. However with their characters being unconfirmed (Ritter’s believed to be Rouge and Browne to be Maria Robotnik) they can probably wait for that reveal to be the headline. They join the also-returning cast members Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, Idris Elba as Knuckles, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, Tom Butler as Commander Walters, and James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Sonic’s adoptive parents Tom and Maddie Wachowski. Ritter would confirm her casting by posting the very Sonic Adventure 2-homaging logo reveal video, released Friday, to her socials.
From Paramount Pictures, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is still set for a December 20, 2024 theatrical release. It is directed by Jeff Fowler, and written by returning duo Pat Casey and Josh The Knuckles spin-off is still coming to Paramount+, but the labor disputes forced it to miss its expected fall premiere and there hasn’t quite been an update since.
