'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' Signals Hulu Premiere
Make a monkey out of 2024 with the latest installment of the storied franchise at home!
Come stream every ape you’ll see from Planet-A to Kingdom-Z! For the first time since the integration of Hulu into Disney+, a theatrical film that would normally come home just to Hulu will feel the effects that began in December and took full hold at the end of March, and it’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Can you play the movie anymore? Of course you can soon when you couldn’t before! The latest film of the Planet of the Apes franchise will stream on Hulu and Disney+ through Hulu next Friday, August 2.
Due to the dual strikes, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was the first film released by Disney theatrically this year (through 20th Century Studios of course) to really be touted as a blockbuster, doing so on May 10. The first Walt Disney Pictures film, Young Woman and the Sea released three weeks later and hit Disney+ this past Friday. As for how long Kingdom lasted before landing on streaming, it was 84 days, exactly 12 weeks. Last year, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 also made its streaming debut on August 2, but that was a Wednesday and was originally released on May 5, which was the equivalent weekend of where May 3 stood this year. Because of leap years. Kingdom is therefore arriving five days sooner.
Kingdom graciously continues the reboot trilogy that ran from 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes to 2017’s War of the Planet of the Apes Several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, apes are living harmoniously as the dominant species, whule humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader, Proximus Caesar played by Kevin Durand, builds his empire, one young ape named Noa, played by Owen Teague undertakes a painful journey that have him questioning everything he has ever known about the past, forcing choices that will define a future for apes and humans. The film directed by Wes Ball also stars Freya Allen, William H. Macy, Peter Macon, Eka Darville and Dichen Lachman.
Kingdom earned $396 million at the global box office, with $170.7 million of that earned domestically on an estimated production budget of $160 million. When the newest film hit theaters, all nine previous films, the original five-film series, the recent trilogy, and Tim Burton’s attempt inbetween, were all made present on Hulu and Disney+, and the latest’s arrival will likely keep them together for a long while.
