'Futurama' Season 12 Trailer Thinks About Me, Isn’t That Sweet?
Handle with care the poster for the Planet Express crew’s next handful of adventures on Hulu beginning July 29
Well, I wasn’t expecting to make a reference to Sabrina Carpenter’s music, but it felt right for the content, so here we are. Hulu has released the trailer for the twelfth broadcast season of Futurama, ahead of its July 29 premiere. This consists of the back ten episodes of production season 8.
The official synopsis reads “On this orbit around the sun, our occasionally heroic crew embarks on mind-bending adventures involving birthday party games to the death, the secrets of Bender's ancestral robot village, A.I. friends (and enemies), impossibly cute beanbags, and the true 5 million-year-old story behind the consciousness-altering substance known as coffee. And, of course, the next chapter in Fry and Leela's fateful, time-twisted romance.” Check out the poster.
The coffee episode which inspired the article’s title, “Planet Espresso” features heavily in the trailer, which starts off with a crash of the ship at Planet Express. The crew has come back closer than ever, all hugging in a line for once. Fry takes Leela’s hand as she starts to cry. We get a glimpse of Bender’s relatives in what’s definitely a Mexican village, and he gets hugged by his niece, which most certainly comes from "One Is Silicon and the Other Gold". I am definitely getting cold feet as to whether the episode titles will get their own reveal so I’m going to be open about it here, at least gleaning what scenes come from what episodes. There’s a jetpack-utilizing heist mission. Quick cuts of a few locations, including a return to Mars and a Mesoamerican civilization leads to the coffee story, and of course one spanning five million years is going to include a 2001: A Space Odyssey monolith homage. Hermes and Farnsworth have some for themselves, and the latter explodes. Kif and Zapp’s new commander wears a map-adorned jumpsuit. While it could be from “Cuteness Overlord”, what comes next is definitely from “Attack of the Clothes” with Fry and crew in ship as clothes and undergarments populate the stormy skies and rain down. The kids step on Kif who gets enclosed in a giant dictionary, Bender’s head explodes, Mom gets a slap of her sons in, and Leela, Amy, LaBarbara, the pigtailed sewer mutant and the nurse attend the funeral of someone who looks stepped on. I imagine the latter thing to be the more outlandish tale from this season’s anthology "The Futurama Mystery Liberry". There’s a shootout with the AI doubles and the Globetrotters are back, with so much more violence and shenanigans to ensue.
Futurama originally ran on Fox for four production (five broadcast) seasons and 72 episodes from 1999-2003. It was first revived for four direct-to-video films from 2007 to 2009. Those make 16 episodes for a broadcast fifth season, and led to 2 seasons and 52 episodes (split into four 13s) from 2010 to 2013 on Comedy Central. Hulu revived the series with the initial 20 episode order in February 2022, which this is the back half of. The series stars Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, and David Herman. The Simpsons creator Groening developed the series David X. Cohen and they serve as executive producers with Ken Keeler and Claudia Katz. The series was renewed for a ninth broadcast season of another 20 episodes, making broadcast seasons 13 and 14, but that didn’t stop “Otherwise”, this season’s finale from being an intentional “Overclockwise” or “Meanwhile”-sounding almost-series finale. And if this is coming only 10 days after Hit Monkey’s season 2 trailer, maybe Solar Opposites’s trailer is ten days away now.
