Mai And Ty Lee Confirmed For Live Action 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Season 1 Hours Before Release
Well if they were going to bring in Azula earlier in this version it does make sense they’re coming too
The press tour for Netflix’s live action series adaptation of beloved Nicktoon Avatar: The Last Airbender has featured several foot-in-mouth moments from cast and crew alike that has left fans feeling that they don’t truly know the series, or how the characters are supposed to develop, putting confidence in the series in free fall. With less than 12 hours until the series, Azula’s closest allies Mai and Ty Lee are confirmed to be part of season 1, making them equally early arrivals, having all originally appeared in the second season.
Entertainment Weekly has revealed that Thalia Tran plays “unflappable and deadpan teen” Mai, and Momona Tamada plays "energetic and upbeat” Ty Lee, which yeah feel like understatements.for how polar opposite they are. Mai was voiced by Cricket Leigh, and Ty Lee was voiced by Olivia Hack, probably otherwise best known as Rhonda on Hey Arnold! The first (and presumably only) scene to feature them released as a clip sees them as Azula (played by Elizabeth Yu)’s venting target as she laments the praise her brother, Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) is getting from their father, Fire Lord Ozai, played by Daniel Dae Kim. Azula’s early entry into the series means season 1 events will get to be recontextualized through her point of view, as Yu explains “A lot of the O.G. series was through the eyes of Zuko,” she said. “I feel like our show lets [Azula and Ozai] have their own start to their story before all the stuff that we know them to do later on.… We get to see her origin story, which is really cool."
Based on the 2005-2008 Nickelodeon animated series from Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino, this Avatar: The Last Airbender was ordered in 2018. It is set in a mystical world where people can manipulate, or bend, the elements. 12-year-old Aang, played by Gordon Cormier, awakens to waterbenders Katara, played by Kiawentiio, and Sokka, played by Ian Ousley from a self-induced century-long icy stasis to discover that his airbending people have been genocided, and Zuko has been searching for him to redeem his disgraced name.. The Fire Nation, led by Ozai, is encroaching on global domination. As the Avatar, who can bend all four elements known at the time, Aang must bring balance to the world and works with his friends to stop them. Unfortunately, the clip Entertainment Weekly shared featuring Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee really is something of an exclusive as it’s on their native player and not any social media embeddable here.
Netflix’s live action Avatar: The Last Airbender releases its 8-episode first season tomorrow. In lieu of being able to embed the Mai and Ty Lee clip, here is the final trailer, where we do get to see the duality of Aang’s air scooter but also his enraged Avatar State at the sight of his genocided people.
