Murray Gold Is Returning As Composer For 'Doctor Who'
The composer had done the revival's first ten series, its spinoffs and other series and then re-collaborated with returning showrunner Russell T. Davies for his shows between stints
First, Doctor Who brought back Russell T. Davies for a second stint as showrunner. Then, David Tennant was brought back, eventually revealed to be a second separate regeneration of the Doctor. Now, Murray Gold is back as composer, starting with November’s 60th anniversary special, it was announced Monday.
Gold was first brought on as composer for the show’s revival, which premiered in 2005, shaping the modern sound for the series and themes for all types of characters. The official announcement cites his revamping of the theme tune and creating the music for the Daleks and Cybermen as such highlights in “forging a new musical identity for the show”. His initial tenure as composer outlasted Davies and Tennant’s original stints, in fact lasting through the Eleventh (Matt Smith) and Twelfth (Peter Capaldi) Doctors under succeeding showrunner Steven Moffat. Having stepped down, he was succeeded by Segun Akinola as the composer for the Thirteenth Doctor era, played by Jodie Whittaker and run by Chris Chibnall.
His collaborations with Davies go back further before Doctor Who, but in the latter’s between years, granted at the rather tail end, they would reunite for both Years and Years and It’s A Sin. The latter is the series where Davies first met Neil Patrick Harris and thus how Harris got his mystery role in the upcoming 60th-anniversary special(s?). There are three specials for the occasion. The third special will end with Tennant’s regeneration from the Fourteenth Doctor into Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor. His adventure begins with a Christmas special and an eight-episode series 14, for which Gold is also composing.
All of these episodes will be coming over the next year, starting in November. While in the United Kingdom and Ireland Doctor Who remains on the BBC, these episodes and all after it for the foreseeable future will be on Disney+ everywhere else. Gold’s return announcement can be seen below. The video is also on the show’s YouTube, however shorts don’t embed like regular videos do.
