Netflix Releases A Monster Of An Official Trailer For 'Dead Boy Detectives'
The Sandmanverse and Vertigo Comics-based series premieres on April 25
Netflix has released the official trailer for Dead Boy Detectives, premiering next Thursday, April 25, and before a final Sweet Tooth can be quelled, this cheating scandal needed to be tended to.
The good news is the trailer, set to My Chemical Romance’s “Welcome to the Black Parade”, does indeed confirm that Supernatural alum Ruth Connell is reprising her Doom Patrol role as Night Nurse, warning that ghosts Edwin Payne (played by George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), by solving mysteries of other ghosts involved in supernatural crimes that mortal law enforcement and detectives just can’t, are cheating death. They call themselves the Dead Boy Detective Agency. And being set in the same world as Netflix hit The Sandman (as set from their Neil Gaiman-created source Vertigo/DC comics) that means being on the run from Death herself, with Kirby Howell-Baptiste, lately credited mononymously as Kirby, who is briefly seen.
Edwin and Charles, respectively the brains and the brawn, will do anything to stick together – including escaping evil witches and Hell as well. With the help of a clairvoyant named Crystal Palace (Kassius Nelson) and her friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura), they are able “to crack some of the mortal realm’s most mystifying paranormal cases.” It’s also been described as “a fresh take on a ghost story that explores loss, grief and death through the lens of [Edwin and Charles]… and their very alive friend, Crystal. It’s a lot like a vintage detective series — only darker and on acid.” The series also stars Jenn Lyon, Briana Cuoco, Lukas Gage, and David Iacono. Steve Yockey, developer of Max’s The Flight Attendant, developed the series for television and serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Arrow’s Beth Schwartz, who is co-showrunner. The series’s other executive producers include Gaiman, Greg Berlanti, Jeremy Carver, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman. The first episode is directed and executive produced by Lee Toland Krieger. Berlanti Productions produces in association with Warner Bros. Television, where Berlanti Productions is still under an overall deal. The series was originally ordered for what was then-HBO Max just as Warner Bros. Discovery was forming in April 2022. Too far outside the realm of the DC Universe being built by new DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran by the end of that year, the move to Netflix was made official in February 2023, and premieres there on April 25.
