'Superman: Legacy' Has First Table Read And Cast Photo
The photo also reveals one more bit of casting for a character who’s rarely had the spotlight
Filming will be starting this week for the first project of the new DC Universe that actually needs filming, Superman: Legacy. The James Gunn-directed and written film’s cast has made it to Atlanta and had their first table read. To celebrate, the cast took their first photo on the lot.
Whether Gunn took it or not, he posted it on his socials, captioning it “After the table read with the Superman cast. Eve, Mr. Terrific, Superman/Clark, Otis, Lex, producer Peter Safran, Jimmy, Metamorpho, Lois, Hawkgirl, me, Guy, The Engineer all together for the first time! What a wonderful day.” That’s a somewhat clockwise read from left to right, with a little up-and-downiness with David Corenswet, who’s playing Clark/Superman, standing behind Edi Gathegi and…Otis’s actor. Now it’s very understandable if you find yourself asking “Who’s Otis?” Otis is Lex Luthor’s henchman, created for the 1978 Superman film, played by Ned Beatty to serve Gene Hackman’s Lex. Like Jimmy Olsen, Perry White and Eve Teschmacher before him and numerous characters after him, including eventual adapted sister Mercy Graves, he would make his way to the comics. While he does make appearances in other adaptations like SuperFriends, Young Justice, and the lightly-alluded to Supergirl series, the Christopher Reeve-starring film is the most substantial, the role even being reduced in the sequel.
One may also be wondering who’s playing Otis, and that’s Terence Rosemore. He comes from Gunn’s circles, having had different roles in the last three Guardians of the Galaxy productions: Narblik in Vol. 2, Xlomo Smeth in Vol. 3, and Gurb in Holiday Special, as well as a Crew Chief in The Suicide Squad, and the gym teacher in Gunn production Brightburn. Over Rosemore’s left shoulder is Nicholas Hoult, debuting his shaven head for his role as Lex Luthor. Completing the rounds, it’s Skyler Gisondo, Anthony Carrigan, Rachel Brosnahan, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, María Gabriela De Faría, and back at the start with Sara Sampaio.
Frankly, unless Gunn and Safran are hiding other cast out of shot, it seems Otis is the final character they’re willing to share at the most primary level of the cast. Which means that sure, the “new character” Gunn promised still isn’t clarified, but supers and villains of the film are all accounted for among the major roles. Superman: Legacy is currently set for release in theaters on July 11, 2025.
