Netflix Dives Into 'SpongeBob' Anniversary Celebration With ‘Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie’ Official Trailer
Oh who wants to see SpongeBob in Netflix in the States? Everybody!
Well, SpongeBob’s 25th anniversary celebration rages on. As we speedboat toward San Diego Comic-Con’s part, with panels and immersive experiences, we’ve had Paramount+’s SpongeBomb with the latest full seasons from the entire franchise landing on July 10, SpongeBob and Patrick hosting and Sandy directing the Kids Choice Awards on July 13, and Nickelodeon celebrating his birthday the next day, with the regular debut anniversary being July 17. All this past week there were new SpongeBob episodes commemorating the anniversary with plots, elements and characters that reached into the show’s history that may not have been acknowledged for a while. But before all that, Netflix released the official trailer (and poster) for their part of the celebrations, their exclusive movie Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, which only premieres the week after the convention on August 2, so it’s definitely in range.
The trailer opens on what seems to be a pretty great day in Bikini Bottom until the entire town is scooped up by an excavator coming from a marine biology lab. It’s Sandy and SpongeBob’s job to save them. The Bottomites get played with, and Sandy enlists her family for assistance. As for SpongeBob getting dried out? There’s hydration spray for that now. It’s all set to quite the interesting “It Takes Two” cover. The hip hop to make a thing go right one of course.
Carolyn Lawrence and Tom Kenny of course star as Sandy Cheeks and SpongeBob SquarePants, with fellow castmates Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick Star, Mr. (Doug) Lawrence as Plankton (and probably Larry the Lobster), Rodger Bumpass as Squidward, Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, Mary Jo Catlett as Mrs. Puff, and Jill Talley as Karen. New characters for the film include Craig Robinson as Pa Cheeks, Grey Griffin as both Ma and Granny Cheeks, and in his second role in the series, Johnny Knoxville is voicing brother Randy Cheeks. Wanda Sykes plays the live action villain Sue Nahmee, because it wouldn’t be a SpongeBob movie without live action characters, it’s just got to be accepted at this point. It will also feature Ilia Isorelýs Paulino as Phoebe and Matty Cardarople as Kyle. A recent Netflix event featured a preview of a scene which involved Sandy and her family in a high-speed car chase.
Last week’s episodes brought SpongeBob SquarePants over 300 episodes. A second Netflix-bound “spinoff” film, Plankton: The Movie, is set to be released next year. Directed by Liza Johnson, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie is written by Kaz and Tom Stern, and series vets Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller serve as executive producers. It releases August 2 on Netflix.
