New 'Blade' Game Announced At The Game Awards 2023
The new game is in development from Bethesda Softworks and Arkane Lyon
Bethesda Softworks and Marvel Games announced that Marvel’s Blade is in development. Based on the beloved vampire hunter from Marvel Comics, the game comes from Arkane Lyon, who created the Dishonored series and its 2021 followup Deathloop. A teaser trailer was released during this year’s The Game Awards on Thursday.
The game tells an original story not adapting anything, and contains “immersive” gameplay and a sophisticated, multi-layered narrative, in a style described as signature to Arkane Lyon. The provided synopsis describes that vampires have emerged in Paris, France and begun a reign of terror that forces the people to shelter in fear until morning comes, and quarantine is called. It’s a supernatural emergency only your favorite daywalker could handle.
“In honor of Blade’s 50th anniversary, we have found the perfect match for the Daywalker in Arkane Lyon, a studio of uncompromising artists who continually push the boundaries of game design and innovation,” said Bill Rosemann, Vice President and Creative Director of Marvel Games. He points to their talent, “personal passion” and “bold vision” for the character that made them the right choice for the collaboration. Dinga Bakaba, the Game Director at Arkane Lyon connected to Blade as they are both mixed race, and says it fulfills a dream to give his and his team’s own take on the character, and is ecstatic to take on such a challenge in doing so, as he’s also from Paris, where again, the game takes place.
“From his trench coat to his iconic sunglasses, Blade is a slick, stylish, and driven character,” said Sebastien Mitton, the co-creative and art director at Arkane Lyon. “This project is the perfect opportunity to push Arkane’s art style into an even more modern and bold territory. The essence of our work lives at the junction of impactful ideas and innovative know-how.”
While Marvel’s Blade is seemingly in too early of development to have any sort of release projections, the Marvel Cinematic Universe won’t be releasing their Blade solo movie until November 2025. Depending on how long an exclusive theatrical window Disney chooses to give it, that gives at least 2 years if Marvel Games is aiming for any sort of synergistic release of the game specifically with the film.
