Nintendo Will Announce Its Switch From The Switch By March 2025
The Switch 2 is finally coming! But whatever it’s called, it won’t be announced this quarter. Likely not the next either.
After what has easily become years of rabid speculation about a successor console to the Nintendo Switch, there is now a timetable for when it will finally become public. Nintendo will make a formal announcement about the long-awaited console by March 2025.
The full statement has Nintendo’s president Shuntaro Furikawa reporting in on the NintendoCoLtd Twitter account, stating “We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.” Fiscal years at Nintendo, and presumably therefore all Japan-based companies, run from April-March, thus why the Switch itself had a March announcement, and it seems 10 years later, by March 2025 they’re poised to do it again. Nintendo also warns not to expect any information about the new console to be gleaned from its next Nintendo Direct in June, as its focus will be on the Switch games coming for the rest of 2024.
In its earnings call Tuesday (yay time zones!), encompassing the fiscal year 2024, Nintendo reported to have sold 15.7 million Switch consoles. They stated sales reached ¥1.7 trillion for the year, up 4.4% from last year, with profits totaling ¥490.6 billion, an increase of 13.4%. Ultimately, this was above analysts’ expectations, according to LSEG consensus data. For the ongoing fiscal year, Nintendo is projecting they’ll sell 13.5 million Switch consoles, a significant drop from last year, amounting to estimated net sales of ¥1.35 trillion and net profit of 300 billion yen.
This comes just a month after Nintendo officially moved on from the 3DS and WiiU after more than a decade by shuttering their online services, leading to a Switch-only focus. Man, the Switch 2 rumors have been utterly rabid, and by this point have had some thoroughly debunked claims. It will be such a relief to put them to rest.
