'Peacemaker' Season 2 Adds Sol Rodriguez And 'Power Rangers' Actor David Denman
You hear that? Roy’s coming all the way from Scranton to the new DC Universe
Peacemaker is ready to take two more to task as it plunges into the new DC Universe in its second season. Star Trek: Picard season 2 recurrer Sol Rodriguez and David Denman, probably best known as Pam’s initial fiancé Roy on The Office, have both joined the cast of the Max series.
Rodríguez, who after having “no words” called her casting “one of the best days of [her] life” when tweeting about the news, is playing Sasha Bordeaux. Bordeaux was created by Greg Rucka and Shawn Martinbrough, first appearing in Detective Comics #751. Bordeaux was at first primarily associated with Batman, at first as a bodyguard he wasn’t a fan of, before falling in love with him. He’s still dating other women. Eventually, associations with the Checkmate organization would be seeded, in turn part of Amanda Waller’s Task Force X, and thus, makes Peacemaker connections that bring her in orbit of being a character here. It starts off that Checkmate orchestrates life-saving medical treatment for her while she’s in prison. Bordeaux finds herself in a position where she must work for them, facilitating them faking her death and providing plastic surgery with a new name and identity. It was only after believing she’s dead that Batman realizes romantic feelings, but she’s not in a situation where they can pursue it anymore. Denman’s role is not being revealed yet.
In addition to playing Dr. Teresa Ramirez on Picard, Rodriguez previously recurred on Freeform’s Party of Five reboot as Natalia the babysitter and was a series regular for the fourth season of Devious Maids. Before all that, she was a main character, Mercedes "Mecha" Estevez, on Nickelodeon Latin America’s telenovela Grachi, which received the 2014-15 American remake Every Witch Way in the United States. Coincidentally, she starred alongside María Gabriela de Faría, who Peacemaker series creator James Gunn cast as Angela Spica aka The Engineer in his Superman movie, in the latter two seasons. It is because of Gunn’s duties between Superman, Peacemaker, the animated Creature Commandos, and general things as DC Studios co-CEO that it was originally believed Peacemaker would be pushed further back among the “Gods and Monsters” chapter’s TV slate in the new universe. However things got moved around during the dual strikes, and so Peacemaker season 2 is progressing faster than its Waller spinoff, or Lanterns and Booster Gold. Lanterns is progressing for third position it seems. Gunn wrote every episode of season 2 like he did season 1, but will only direct three of those eight episodes this go-round.
Denman appeared as Roy Anderson in 32 episodes of the 2005-2013 series, which began when Gunn and Pam’s actress Jenna Fischer were still married, and on television has since recurred on Parenthood and appeared in miniseries like Mare of Easttown and Netflix’s recently-released Eric starring Benedict Cumberbatch. In film, he’s actually been involved with most of the Gunn brothers, starring in Brightburn, an exploration of the Evil Superman trope at the child stage, which was only produced by James but directed by Brian and Mark. He also appeared as Jason’s dad in the 2017 Power Rangers movie, and other films like Big Fish, When a Stranger Calls, Shutter, Smart People, After Earth, The Gift, 13 Hours, Logan Lucky, and most recently Joy Ride and The Equalizer 3.
The pair are hopping along with Frank Grillo, reprising the role of Rick Flagg Sr. for the John Cena-starring series alongside Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Freddie Stroma, a carry that Gunn confirmed while celebrating the debut anniversary of Stroma’s character Vigilante.
