Pixar Switches 'Dream Productions' And 'Win Or Lose' Release Dates
The new Disney+ series’ release dates were revealed in a teaser that shared footage of the former publicly for the first time.
Tomorrow, Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 arrives on Disney+ after becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The feat was still in progress when Pixar unveiled the spinoff series Dream Productions at the D23 Disney Entertainment Showcase in early August, announced for an early 2025 release. Now just a month and a half later, the first trailer has released, which seems odd. And that’s because things have changed. It shares the space with Pixar’s first long-form animated series, Win Or Lose, because apparently, they’ve switched spots. Seems the demand for more Inside Out had to be answered sooner.
The trailer reveals Dream Productions to be a four-episode limited series that will be released December 11. It takes place between the two films and is set in a studio where Riley’s dreams are made every night, on time and on budget. Some memories in need of extra processing are sent to Dream Productions, and when Riley falls asleep, all of her dreams are made like actual films. Written and directed by Mike Jones, Dream Productions will feature Riley and her core five emotions all reprising their roles from the second film. That’s Kensington Tallman as Riley, Amy Poehler as Joy, Liza Lapira as Disgust, Tony Hale as Fear, Lewis Black as Anger and Phyllis Smith as Sadness. New to the franchise are Maya Rudolph, Richard Ayoade, and Ally Maki.
As for Win Or Lose, which was previously announced to premiere on December 6 (meaning they’ve moved the December release of X Pixar series from the Friday to the following Wednesday), it has now been delayed to February 19, 2025, which is probably considered at least somewhat sooner than the “next spring” window Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter gave when talking about Dream Productions in June, also calling the latter “done”, so it seems they had no reason to wait. It’s batter up for the Pickles, a co-ed middle school softball team, in the week leading up to their championship game. Each of the eight episodes takes place that same week, highlighting the perspective of a different main character, whether it’s the insecure kids, their helicopter parents, or even the lovesick umpire, each reflected in a unique visual style. There isn’t a ton of new footage in this teaser, if any at all, but clearly the priorities were elsewhere. Win or Lose’s ready-to-play voice cast includes Will Forte as Coach Dan, while characters for Izaac Wang, Ian Chen, Jo Firestone, Milan Ray, Josh Thomson, Erin Keif and Rosie Foss still have not been announced. It is created directed and executive produced by Pixar veterans Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates. David Lally is the producer.
“These two series really show Pixar creativity at its finest,” Docter said in a statement Tuesday. “We’re excited fans won’t have to wait long for more great content from the world of Inside Out. Dream Productions offers up a treasure trove of jokes and fun as it digs deeper into one of our favorite parts of the first film, the making of Riley’s dreams. And we consider Win or Lose a major, first-of-its-kind tentpole series, one that really showcases what I think makes our studio great: bold, imaginative storytelling; laugh-out-loud humor; and characters that we can all relate to.”
