Rifftrax Rides Its Final Wave Of Stretch Goals For Its Kickstarter Campaign
The vinyl countdown has begun in the latest stages of the riffers’ campaign for the 'Point Break' live show
Rifftrax Live never dies! The Rifftrax Kickstarter campaign for Rifftrax Live: Point Break waxes on and with twelve days to go in the campaign. As I was prepping writing, the campaign got its 5500th backer, unlocking the ninth shorts stretch goal, “Farm Animals”, joining “Wonderful World of Tupperware”, “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “Six Murderous Beliefs”, “The Kids Guide to the Internet”, “Truck Song”, “People Soup”, “The Boy Who Didn’t Listen”, and “Arranging the Buffet Supper”. That leaves only the live edition of “Play Safe” at 5750 backers. At start of writing, there were 5531 backers amassing $495,659, and now the guys are looking ahead with new backer-based milestones.
Having clinched the production of Cheep Tunes: Music From RiffTrax Live, the guys are now looking to press beyond a simple digital release for the album and into something physical. The guys are looking to make the company's first-ever vinyl record! If unlocked, it will be an add-on for everyone starting at the $100 DVD level, as they’re all tiers that include physical rewards. For those who backed at lower, digital-only tiers, it can be grabbed after the campaign has ended during the survey process at PledgeManager. At 6500 backers, those at $40 Point Break Live Show Download Package tier or above will have their name included in a small font on a pre-show trivia slide that will air during the live show, and preserved on RiffTrax Live: Point Break physical media releases.
At 7000 backers, Trace Beaulieu and Frank Coniff of The Mads Are Back, named such when started in 2015 because they were Mads Dr. Clayton Forrester (and Crow T. Robot) and TV’s Frank on Mystery Science Theater 3000 for 7 and 5 seasons respectively, have made their own contributions for stretch goals. Namely, the only all-backers non-shorts stretch goal in the entire ordeal. It’s a video-on-demand offering of “The Best of A Night Of Shorts”, which will be available to download on Rifftrax’s website after the end of the campaign. But that’s not all! At 7500 backers, those at the $80 Digital Only + Digital Stretch tier and higher will get the Mads' take on The Phantom From 10,000 Leagues as yet another of their rewards. The show, originally aired March 12 and attended virtually by yours truly, included a Q&A with Mike, Bill, and Kevin to promote this very Kickstarter. The Mads Are Back is essentially a third camp of modern riffing born from the splintering of MST3K alums, though the modern MST3K was established the latest, at the very end of 2015 when its Kickstarter campaign ended.
At 8000 backers, Mike Nelson and his wife Bridget will host a movie riffing viewing party and Q&A with the subject to be announced. How widespread the availability of the event will be is curiously not specified at all. Odd oversight. From here, the rewards are for $80 Digital Only + Digital Stretch tier and higher backers explicitly as at 8500 backers the guys will play a game of putt-putt golf at Big Stone Mini Golf, a special course featuring an elaborate sculpture garden and farm animals wandering around. The excursion will be filmed and made available free for those backers, probably akin to their Golden Corral trip. At 9000 backers a Just the Jokes MP3 will be produced for the original 1984 The Karate Kid starring Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita and William Zabka. This film probably doesn’t need a plot summary. And finally, at 10,000 backers, Kevin Murphy will go skydiving in the spirit of Point Break, obviously with an attached professional skydiver to guide him, since he's probably a rookie or at the very most still below the threshold required to do them solo. It too will be filmed.
Overnight (because sleep came first), the campaign gained 84 backers and grew to $499,686 raised so The 2nd Annual Bridget & Mary Jo Meat and Makeup Raffle is practically assured. The campaign ends on April 8, and the screenings for Rifftrax Live: Point Break will be on August 8 and 13 through Fathom Events in theaters nationwide.
