'She-Hulk' Breakout Madisynn King Makes Her Comics Debut
A “But not where you think" would probably only work for another medium if it ended up being 'Spidey and His Amazing Friends'
The Marvel Cinematic Universe may be between productions on both big and small screens right now, but it’s still making an impact in Marvel Comics. The character Madisynn King, who first appeared played by Patty Guggenheim in the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law episode "Is This Not Real Magic?" is about to make her comics debut.
In the episode, Madisynn is a ditzy party girl who becomes audience to Donny Blaze's (played by Rhys Coiro) magical act. She’s brought up as a volunteer for the exiled Kamar-Taj student, and the Mystic Arts misuser opens a portal to a hellish dimension. Her deal to get out lands her in Wong (played by Benedict Wong)’s living room in the midst of an episode of The Sopranos. The ensuing lawsuit Wong initiates to stop Blaze’s unauthorized magic use sees Madisynn take the stand for some hilarious testimony. Despite spoiling that Sopranos episode, she and Wong would develop quite a cute friendship over other shows like This Is Us (whose onscreen presence in contrast to The Sopranos’s inspired a whole explainer at the old gig), and even drinking preferences. Now, in What If...? Venom #3, out Wednesday, their hangouts are coming to a new medium.
It should be prefaced that Wong in the comics, at least these comics, does not have his actor’s likeness. This version looks far closer to what MCU viewers have seen of The Ancient One, played by Tilda Swinton. But that’s still more than what we actually see of Madisynn. Doctor Strange is trying to figure out the alien creature that attacked him, actually a Venom symbiote. Having trouble, he looks to Wong. However, Wong has other plans: to watch the season finale of The Bachelor with her, supplied with endless gin and tonics and weeks of anticipation. She beckons him from behind the portal with their setup, just out of view, even calling him “Wongers”.
Madisynn is not the first TV character to make their way to mainstream comics, but she might be one of the most minor in a while. On the DC side, the Arrowverse, the DCAU, Super Friends, and even The Batman have all made their contributions. You probably know the biggies, maybe more, maybe less. On the Marvel side, Agents of SHIELD cemented its legacy, while Coulson predated the show, Agents May, Fitz, Simmons, and even Trip have all made their way. X-Men Evolution introduced Spyke and X-23. And she probably won’t be the last.
