Sigourney Weaver Joined 'The Mandalorian & Grogu' Specifically For “Badass” Grogu
There is no Zuul, but there is excitement
Sigourney Weaver has worked with many an alien over her career, from the Xenomorphs of Alien to the Na’vi of Avatar, but says she never really thought about joining the Star Wars franchise. When she was offered a role in the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu, a role that still has not been revealed, it was the title Yoda-like alien that enticed her to sign on.
"I get to have scenes with a little Grogu which is probably why I did the movie," Weaver said. "And he's a little badass too. It's going to be wonderful for people to see what Grogu is up to now because he's grown up a little bit and is capable of much more than maybe we think just watching the series." While she did not confirm her character, she was more than happy to at least describe her: "I play a wonderful character who is, you know, in a position of authority. And I have to send the Mandalorian out on a mission on the Outer Rim where all the bad stuff happens."
She was also rather candid as to other reasons why she didn’t join the franchise sooner. "I admire [Star Wars], but I don't sit around wishing I was in another franchise, because I've been so lucky to be in some wonderful ones," Weaver adds. "But at the time, when I was offered it, I was delighted. I'm a great fan of Jon Favreau. I was already a great fan of The Mandalorian." Weaver had already joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Alexandra, the leading finger of The Hand in the The Defenders miniseries that was a major convergence point for the Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist Netflix series that were going on at the time.
The twice-offscreen Pixar voice actress has been promoting the Apple TV+ film The Gorge, which releases to the service Friday. The movie follows two highly-trained operatives played by Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy) as they are appointed to guard opposite watchtowers overlooking a misty and mysterious gorge, "protecting the world from an undisclosed, mysterious evil that lurks within” as the service’s description reads.
In addition to directing, Favreau co-wrote the The Mandalorian & Grogu screenplay with Dave Filoni. The film stars Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt, and features Jonny Coyne also reprising his role from the series as an Imperial Warlord. Droidsmith Babu Frik from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, voiced by Shirley Henderson, has a cameo as does fan-favorite Zeb from the Rebels animated series. The film is set to be released in theaters on May 22, 2026.
