'Star Trek: Section 31' Movie Premiere Date Set, Dashes Fan’s Opportunity For Triple 31s
You didn’t say it was your birthday… Paramount+ premieres the first straight-to-streaming Trek film in January.
Star Trek: Section 31, the first feature film in the Star Trek franchise in what is more than 8 years, will be three months closer to nine when it releases on Paramount+, also making it the franchise’s first straight-to-streaming film. So of course it was a major part of Saturday’s Star Trek Universe panel at New York Comic-Con. There, the film’s release date was announced, and it’s January 24, 2025, for the United States and wherever else the service is available.
The panel was moderated by CBS News national correspondent Vladimir Duthiers, with cast members Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl and Robert Kazinsky, along with executive producer and director Olatunde Osunsanmi all on hand, with a remote video appearance from the film’s star, Michelle Yeoh. She reprises her Star Trek: Discovery role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou, a mirror universe counterpart of Michael Burnham’s first Captain, who joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets. Doing so she also must face the sins of her tyrannical past, which includes her upbringing as a young child and her rise to power. Hardwick and Kazinsky’s roles still haven’t been revealed, but Rohl is playing Rachel Garrett, eventual captain of the Enterprise-C.
January of course is a month containing 31 days, so it’s probably odd to come up just a week short. More personally, January 31 is my birthday, and my thirty-first birthday to boot. I think the trendy thing is to say it’s a “golden” birthday? I just think it would’ve been cool to celebrate my 31st birthday with the release of Section 31. How much more 31 could a guy realistically and safely get anyway? The release does mark 51 weeks since the start of production.
Star Trek: Section 31 also stars Sven Ruygrok, Humberly Gonzalez, and James Hiroyuki Liao, and Miku Martineau, who portrays a young Georgiou. Written by Craig Sweeny and directed by the aformentioned Osunsanmi, they executive produce with Alex Kurtzman, Yeoh, Aaron Baiers, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth, and is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. They weren’t ready for a new trailer, so the franchise website, and subsequently at least one trade publication embedded the teaser trailer that was released at San Diego Comic-Con in July. The poster seen below spawns individual posters for each character/letter.
