'The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie' Officially Sets Up North American Release Date
Get ready bubble brains, the first fully-animated non-compilation Looney Tunes film hits theaters in February
It has been a long three years for domestic audiences trying to see The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie. From its announcement for Cartoon Network and HBO Max to being dropped in August, being pivoted to a theatrical release, changing titles forth and back, taking two years to find a new American distributor in Ketchup Entertainment, but the light at the end of the tunnel has been found. The film has received a North American release date of February 28, 2025.
The film’s world premiere happened at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June, and was released in Germany and Switzerland the week before Ketchup’s acquisition. Its North American premiere is Friday, today as of writing at the Animation Is Film festival, allowing it to qualify for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards. Starring Eric Bauza as both Porky Pig and Daffy Duck, they’re local bubble gum factory workers who uncover a sinister alien invasion plot. They and Petunia Pig, voiced by Candi Milo, form an unlikely trio of heroes embarking on a high-stakes mission to fight off not only aliens but zombies too in the familiar Looney Tunes manner. The film also stars Peter MacNicol as The Invader with Wayne Knight as Homeless Man, Fred Tatasciore as Farmer Jim and a scientist, and Laraine Newman as the landlady.
“For generations, the Looney Tunes have held a soft spot in the hearts of fans the world over, including my own,” Ketchup Entertainment CEO Gareth West said. “It’s a true pleasure to bring into theaters Peter Browngardt’s hilariously smart, emotional, and gorgeously rendered story for fans and movie lovers of all ages to experience a wholly new and original cinematic adventure with our friends, Porky and Daffy.”
The Day The Earth Blew Up is directed by Pete Browngardt and produced by Warner Bros Animation, written by Browngardt, Darrick Bachman, Kevin Costello, Andrew Dickman, David Gemmill, Alex Kirwan, Ryan Kramer, Jason Reicher, Michael Ruocco, Johnny Ryan and Eddie Trigueros. Sam Register and Browngardt are executive producers. Of the six projects it was dropped with, it is the fourth to see release, following Merry Little Batman and Urkel Saves Santa: The Movie!’s releases last holiday season, and Batman: Caped Crusader’s premiere on Prime Video in August. The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie fell behind enough that the plot needed to be retooled as it could no longer be the bridge to the new season.
