'Digimon The Movies' Release Date Revealed As Pre-Orders Open
The 25th anniversary of the anime franchise is about to go out in style for the English speaking audience
Boys and girls, boys and girls, let’s all go to the digital world! Discotek Media had another Discotek Day Thursday for the latest news, and it was being handled by the manager of the With the Will Digimon forum MarcFBR. Of course, he was going to lead off with the project he was working closely with: “Digimon the Movies”, which was first announced in July 2023, has been far enough beyond approvals that its Blu-ray is listed for pre-order at the Crunchyroll Store, revealing a December 17 release date.
“Digimon The Movies: Movie Collection 1” includes new dubs of the films that comprised what would be released in the United States as Digimon the Movie: Digimon Adventure, Our War Game, and Hurricane Touchdown. Except (but also not except) this time, they’re each the uncut individual versions. They’re bilingual too, meaning not only do they have the new English dub, but the original Japanese audio with English subtitles. The tone of these new dubs is said to be a mix between classic Digimon dubs and a bit straighter at the same time, using the Japanese music as well. A remaster of the original Digimon: The Movie dub is also included, though the Angela Anaconda open was not secured. Marc noted that this puts the movie back into print for the first time in 15 years.
The cast has pretty much everyone from the original Saban dub still with us reprising. That includes Michael Reisz, who had pretty much left voice acting in favor of television writing, as Matt for the first time since Revenge of Diaboromon, a character who had several voice actors in the projects since. Joshua Seth, who only ever missed Revenge of Diaboromon, as Tai, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Sora, Mona Marshall as Izzy (and Terriermon), Lara Jill Miller as Kari, and Brian Donovan as Davis, and all default-stage partner Digimon to Adventure Digidestined reprise their roles from the series, including Edie Mirman as Kari’s champion stage partner Gatomon after being voiced by Kate Higgins for the last decade of projects. Doug Erholtz as 02-era T.K. is in a similar position, having been voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch in them. Wendee Lee is back as Adventure era T.K. for the first time since that series ended. The Fahns Tom and Dorothy are back in their roles too, as is Paul St. Peter as Diaboromon and its earlier stages, as well as Kokomon’s Wendigomon and Cherubimon stages.
The “still with us” qualifier exists for Mimi, Cody, Joe, Greymon and MetalGreymon, Armadillomon, Gennai and Angemon, who have been recast due to the deaths of Philece Sampler, Michael Lindsay, Joseph Pilato, Robert Axelrod, and Mike Reynolds and retirement of Dave Mallow. Mimi is voiced by Elsie Lovelock, who also voices Matt and T.K.’s grandma, named Kinu. Cody is voiced by Madeline Dorroh, Joe by Eli Farmer, and Bryce Papenbrook takes over his father Bob’s role as the Greymon, referred to Red Greymon that fought Parrotmon at Highton View Terrace in the Adventure movie. The series’s regular Greymon is Bradley Gareth, who also takes over Angemon and MetalGreymon. Voice actor Wayne Grayson, known moreso for his 4Kids resume, takes over Axelrod’s roles as Armadillomon and Upamon.
Quote tweeting Discotek on his personal account, Marc wrote passionately “See into my soul with the release I've been thinking about for over 20 years that I never thought I'd actually get to do. Digimon the Movies is one I bled for & is staring at me. Can't stress how many other people worked hard on it, especially Marissa Lenti”. Lenti was the writer and director of the redub. Justin Sevakis meanwhile relished “It. Is. Finally. Ready.”. Previews should be available soon, and more details will be revealed, including special features, closer to release.
