'Star Wars: Skeleton Crew' Gets First Look And Premiere Date
The 'Goonies'-inspired Disney+ series is getting a late fall release
Star Wars Celebration Europe is going on sixteen months ago now, and for the upcoming series Skeleton Crew, what little was shown to the convention audience wasn’t even released to the public. Now, thanks to a feature in People, series star Jude Law and series creators, showrunners and executive producers Jon Watts and Christopher Ford are finally getting to talk about the show and the experiences making it, as the Disney+ series officially reveals a December 3 premiere date.
The “joyful” series’s official synopsis reads "When four kids make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, they get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Finding their way home, meeting unlikely allies and enemies will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined." Law plays Jod Na Nawood, a nice good Star Warsy name. He describes his character as "someone who uses quick thinking, charm and conversation to get out of all sorts of scenarios”. He stars alongside Ravi Cabot-Conyers as Wim, Kyriana Kratter as KB, Robert Timothy Smith as Neel and Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Fern. In addition, a droid named SM 33 will be introduced and voiced by Nick Frost, though it’s unclear how major the role is.
Law describes that the kids will traverse the most perilous and dangerous places that children definitely should not be in, providing quite the challenge, and promises widespread acknowledgement ranging from the original films to the more recent series. "If you look carefully, [we] got some Star Wars tech that dates right back, I believe, to the original film," he divulges. "They do [easter eggs] so well. That's one of the joys I think of this universe for those who know there are these little details always hidden away or Easter eggs that people can find and link up." The Sherlock Holmes and Captain Marvel star says “There's a lot of originality and I hope that will bring the feeling of fun to those who watch it." On working with his child co-stars, he says "I had a wonderful time making this with everyone involved.” He called them “great fun” and “incredibly professional”, saying he’s “immensely proud to be a part of their crew”.
Watts recalls "Because he's with the kids all the time, he's also kind of felt like the co-director, co-producer with us and he's co-acting coach, you know, giving the kids tips, and they would look to him. He really became sort of a mentor figure to the kids as well," Ford adds, "And he didn't have to do that, he just did that because it was nice and it would make things work great." About SM 33 and Frost, he says with a laugh “He's like a rusty old, cranky droid that sort of reluctantly helps the kids along the way," noting how "fun" and "absolutely perfect" Frost's part is, revealing he's the first mate of a mysterious ship. He also highlights how the references are "In the first episode, there's a couple really, really great references that certain fans will immediately recognize." and assures that they’re not crucial to enjoying the series.
The piece goes on to highlight Skeleton Crew’s importance of droids and hoverbikes in the eight episodes, but does not indicate how many episodes will premiere on December 3 on Disney+. Tunde Adebimpe and Kerry Condon also star. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’s other executive producers include Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson. Watts also directs, along with David Lowery, the Daniels Kwan and Scheinert, Jake Schreier, Bryce Dallas Howard and Lee Isaac Chung. The rest of the first look images can be checked out below.
