'Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story' Receives Regular Theatrical Release Date
Those Fathom Event screenings of the past week are now considered “previews”
When success is fathomable, it’s be-Reeve-able. Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, following the success of the Fathom Events preview screenings on September 21 and 25, will expand to a regular nationwide theatrical release on October 11. Tickets are available now.
Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story was acquired out of the Sundance Film Festival for DC Studios, HBO Documentary Films and CNN Films. It covers Reeve’s meteoric rise to fame thanks to his definitive portrayal of Clark Kent aka Superman in 4 films from 1978 to 1987, setting the standard for the superhero films that now proliferate cinemas. While he had numerous other roles showcasing his talent and range in his craft, a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 caused injuries that left him paralyzed from the neck down, requiring the use of a wheelchair and ventilator. In the face of paraplegia, Reeve became a fervent activist searching for cures for spinal cord injuries, advocating for disability rights and care, and dedicating himself to his beloved family while still maintaining a career in the industry until his 2004 death. It features previously-unseen intimate home movies and an massive amount of personal archive material, the first extended filmed interviews with Reeve’s three children about their father, and interviews with Reeve’s colleagues and friends, including Robin Williams, and newer from Glenn Close and Susan Sarandon.
Jeff Goldstein, the President of Warner Bros. Pictures Domestic Distribution, stated, “Together with our partners at DC Studios, HBO and CNN, we’ve been absolutely thrilled with the reception this extraordinary film has received at festivals and early screenings so far. The documentary that Ian, Peter and the Reeve family have created is not only full of hope, heart and inspiration, but it’s a true cinematic experience, and we couldn’t wait to ensure that audiences everywhere are given ample opportunity to see Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story on the big screen.”
October 11 is going to be quite the busy release weekend. It’s the second for DC Studios’s own Joker: Folie À Deux. The films opening up directly against Super/Man are the animated documentary Piece by Piece about Pharrell Williams done entirely in Lego, making it the first Lego movie since 2019, and the first since Universal picked up the rights, and Jason Reitman’s biodrama Saturday Night, chronicling the chaos leading up to the premiere of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, which, nearly in its 50th season, celebrates its 49th anniversary on release day. Reeve hosted the sixteenth episode of the sketch comedy series’s tenth season on April 6, 1985, with Santana as his musical guest.
