'Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story' Max Streaming Date Reeve-Ealed
The quest for space occupied on Max servers is almost over
It’s a bird, it’s a plane! It’s the reason why Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has a 6:10 PM HBO premiere! The first week of December has gotten even busier for DC Studios, as it has been announced Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story will be released on Max on Saturday, December 7, with its HBO premiere happening that night in the 8 PM timeslot, making for an interesting double feature.
Being from HBO Documentary Films as well, upon further inspection of the wording it very well may be that it’s treated the way a new episode of an HBO series is: It becomes available on Max the moment it starts airing on HBO. Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story covers Reeve’s meteoric rise to fame thanks to his definitive portrayal of Clark Kent aka Superman in four films from 1978 to 1987, setting the standard for the superhero films that now proliferate cinemas. While he had numerous other roles showcasing his talent and range in his craft, a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 caused injuries that left him paralyzed from the neck down, requiring the use of a wheelchair and ventilator. In the face of paraplegia, Reeve leveraged his celebrity platform to become a fervent activist searching for cures for spinal cord injuries, advocating for disability rights and care, and dedicating himself to his beloved family while still maintaining a career in the industry until his 2004 death at the age of 52.
It features not only Reeve’s own interviews, but previously-unseen intimate home movies and a massive amount of personal archive material, the first extended filmed interviews with his three children about their father, and insight from his brother, his first wife Gae Exton, and colleagues and friends, including Robin Williams, and newer from Glenn Close and Susan Sarandon. His second wife Dana cared for him and remained committed to his advocacy work after his death, but succumbed to lung cancer just 17 months later. Reeve’s foundation was therefore renamed the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation on the first anniversary of her death.
DC Studios’s first film is in association with HBO Documentary Films, CNN Films, and Words+Pictures, it was picked up out of the Sundance Film Festival, and initially released with Fathom Events on September 21 and 25, the latter being Reeve’s birthday. It then expanded to a regular nationwide theatrical release on October 11, but apparently not wide enough because I don’t think it ever hit my nearby theater because when I checked it was too soon to be gone. On the bright side, it recently won six Critics Choice Documentary Awards, including Best Documentary Feature and in the Biographical and Archival sub-genres. This Max release and HBO premiere caps off a week for DC Studios that features the series finale of Superman & Lois on The CW on Monday, December 2, and the series premiere of Creature Commandos, which soft launches the new DC Universe on Thursday, December 5, on Max.
