'That '90s Show' Brings Back Betsy Kelso In Faster-Premiering Part 3
It was announced at the end of July that part 3 was expedited from an October 24 release to August 22
In a world where The Conners has spent the last 7 years playing with the canonicity of the mere existence of certain characters from Roseanne (including the first year when it was still Roseanne), one can never be certain how other revivals will handle their own ill-received characters or storylines. For Netflix's That ‘90s Show, whose back half of its second season aka “Part 3” has been moved up its release from October 24 to August 22, and a certain Betsy Kelso, we’re all alright.
In season 6 of the original That ‘70s Show series, her parents, Michael Kelso, played by Ashton Kutcher, and Brooke Rockwell, played by Shannon Elizabeth, met at a Molly Hatchet concert and she ended up pregnant, resulting in her birth at the start of season 7. Kelso’s fatherhood was the storyline that made for Kutcher’s exit ramp at the beginning of Season 8 in early 1979, where Kelso moved to Chicago to be closer to her. By the new series’s first episode, which takes place in 1995, Kelso is married to Jackie (several times), living in Point Place where they raise their son Jay, Betsy’s half-brother played by Mace Coronel. The first season and a half not mentioning Betsy or mom Brooke at all led to many wondering if they had been completely thrown out of canon. It turns out Nate, played by Maxwell Acee Donovan, is putting himself back out there after regretting breaking up with Nikki, who’s got a different boyfriend now, and encounters Betsy completely by chance. She’s played in a recurring capacity by Kira Kosarin, whose work on the new Thundermans series currently has her in Vancouver for the first week of filming.
Part 3 picks up back in the Forman kitchen from right where the front half ended, which means Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith are back too as Bunch and Sonny, Leo’s son. Red and Kitty (Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp) return from Paris to find a giant hole in the wall. Leia, played by Callie Haverda has to deal with that while new relationships form, and old ones advance. Friendships are tested when a blast from the past returns to blow up all the calm again. Summer 1996 is winding down, which means Leia will be heading home again, but this time she and her friends won’t let it happen again without a fight. The trailer shows everyone rounded up for answers about the wall, and Grandpa Bob (Don Stark) ready to throw everyone under the bus. Jay’s hurt and sex-unavailable as Leia’s readiness grows.
Showrunner Gregg Mettler previously revealed that Donna, played once again by Laura Prepon was a major part of these back eight episodes. “She directed the entire Part 3, and she performed a lot in it,” he said, revealing that Seth Green would put in another appearance as Mitch Miller. Jim Rash and Bob Clendenin will again appear as Fenton and Earl, with Speechless’s Cedric Yarbrough and pro wrestler Mike “The Miz” Mizanin also appearing. The main cast also features Ashley Aufderheide as Gwen and Reyn Doi as Ozzie.
