The Doctor Makes An Alarming Barbershop Entrance In New 'Doctor Who' Preview Clip
Can the Doctor shave the universe from within a barbershop?
It’s been a few weeks since we actually got a preview clip from Doctor Who that was independent of the behind the scenes series Doctor Who: Unleashed. Why it is this way might’ve been to keep true natures of certain characters in “The Well” and “Lucky Day” concealed. Maybe it’s because Unleashed already gave two for the latter. Or they didn’t want to burn off the Doctor’s limited screentime in the latter. I’d certainly still like to know a definitive reason, but until that ever comes we have one for this Saturday’s episode “The Story and the Engine” written by Inua Ellams and directed by Makalla McPherson.
The clip is given the description “The TARDIS lands in Lagos so that the Doctor can visit the Barber... but something goes very wrong with the TARDIS as soon as he crosses the threshold.” And indeed, the Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa is walking Lagos’s streets, using his Sonic screwdriver to inspect. He walks in nonchalantly as the patrons react panicked like they’re about to close the door to Boris and Minka’s attic. Indeed, the lights of the TARDIS go red with companion Belinda Chandra, played by Varada Sethu, still inside. It may invoke memories of when the TARDIS became a paradox machine. Or the words “Bad Wolf” started reappearing once Donna Noble relayed that message to the Doctor from Rose Tyler in “Turn Left”. It finishes with “I told you he would come”.
Millie Gibson, Director Peter Hoar, And More Talk Ruby Sunday's “Lucky Day” Return To 'Doctor Who'
It’s long been known that while last season’s companion Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson wouldn’t be the main companion this season on Doctor Who after finding her birth mother Louise Miller, she would still be making a few appearances. She even made a small cameo in the Christmas special “
Who said it? That’s likely Omo Esosa, the Doctor’s friend he’s visiting, played by Sule Rimi. How did they become friends? That’s explored in Ellams’s prequel story “What I Did On My Holidays”, written from Omo’s perspective. It sees how he and the Doctor met when he was a schoolboy in the midst of a devastating forest fire in Etsako in the summer of 1965. From there, you can read on yourself, as it’s available in full on the franchise website. Ellams also cameos in the episode as a market seller.
The episode synopsis reads “In Lagos, Nigeria, the mysterious Barber reigns supreme. The Doctor discovers a world where stories have power, but can he stop the Spider and its deadly web of revenge?” Ariyon Bakare, who plays The Barber after having been Leandro in series 9’s “The Woman Who Lived”, describes the Nigerian culture’s part in the story as “authentic” while the barbershop “serves as a hub of conversation where these stories are shared”. He lauds the incorporation of the old Nigerian folktales, and childhood bedtime stories still universal in appeal. It demonstrates that all stories are significant; not diminished by culture, race, or geography.
“The Story and the Engine” releases at midnight Pacific on Disney+ internationally, which equates to 3 AM Eastern and 8 AM local time on BBC iPlayer. It airs on BBC One at 7:10 PM GMT.
