Woody Woodpecker Goes To Camp In Sequel To 2017 Film
Once again from Universal 1440, the film premieres on Netflix on April 12
Since debuting in 1940, Woody Woodpecker has been quite the inconsistently present character in the 50+ years since his initial run of theatrical shorts ended in 1972. Originally created in 1940 by Walter Lantz, Woody’s popularity has persisted (he’s especially popular in Brazil) despite significant dormancy in new productions and mainstream success. The last decade has seen something of a resurgence for the character, starting with a hybrid movie released by Universal 1440 (the direct-to-video unit of Universal Pictures) in 2017, followed by a set of 20 animated shorts released ten in 2018 and ten in 2020. And suddenly, without warning, Netflix announced a sequel to that 2017 film as part of their Next on Netflix 2024 preview!
Now of course it wasn’t the entire 2024 slate but it’s still part of it. It’s called Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp, and as the header image shows, is exactly like the 2017 film as an animated-live action hybrid, with Eric Bauza returning to the role, or at least is believed to be the case. They weren’t explicit to say so yet. He’s the only confirmed cast member so far.
The logline reads: “After getting kicked out of the forest, Woody thinks he’s found a forever home at Camp Woo Hoo — until an inspector threatens to shut down the camp.” Johnathan Rosenbaum, whose directing credits include Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock and R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour) is the film’s director, from a screenplay written by Cory Edwards, Jim Martin, and Stephen Mazu. Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp premieres on Netflix on April 12.

Most cartoons are never the same when their creators/originators die...
Trust me: the Lantz shorts are where the real Woody exists.
