Clark Johnson To Recur On And Direct 'Daredevil: Born Again' Disney+ Series
Among his numerous directing credits, he returns having directed a 'Luke Cage' episode
The upcoming Daredevil continuation series Daredevil: Born Again has recruited Clark Johnson to do double duty, directing two episodes and acting in a recurring role. The series is one of many that the Writers Guild of America strike has successfully disrupted, with members of Local 817 and IATSE Locals 829 and 52 refusing to cross the picket line on May 6.
While character details have gone unshared, and Marvel hasn’t commented, it’s believed by insiders to be playing a character named “Cherry”. In the comics, there’s a “Randolph Cherryh”, who is described as a respected but corrupt New York City Councilman with strong ties to the Kingpin Wilson Fisk. If the two are meant to be one and the same, this will have been a recast, as Senator Cherryh was played by Jonathan Walker in Daredevil episodes “Nelson v. Murdock” and “Daredevil” (the first season finale). The character was last seen being apprehended by the FBI for his involvement with Fisk.
The series will see Charlie Cox return once again to the role of crimefighter Daredevil, otherwise known by day as attorney Matt Murdock. The cast also includes Vincent D’Onofrio returning as Fisk/Kingpin, Jon Bernthal returning as Punisher, Margarita Levieva, Arty Froushan, Sandrine Holt, Michael Gandolfini, and Nikki M. James.
As an actor, Johnson is known for series regular roles as David Jefferson in the Canadian series Night Heat from 1985–1988, Clark Roberts in the also-Canadian E.N.G. from 1989–1994, and Meldrick Lewis in Homicide: Life on the Street from 1993–1999, attending former colleague John Munch’s retirement party in the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Wonderland Story”. Johnson directed a season one episode in 1999. He is also known as Baltimore Sun editor Gus Haynes on The Wire, where he directed four episodes. He most recently recurred as Father Amara in the Paramount+ series, Evil, another of his directing gigs.
His television directing career also includes the pilot episode of The Shield, which earned him an Emmy nomination. He subsequently directed six later episodes, the last of which he gave himself a role. He’s also done five episodes of Homeland. Most recently, he directed three episodes of two Showtime series: Your Honor and City on a Hill. two episodes of the (HBO) Max miniseries Love & Death (out of its seven) and the Paramount+ drama Mayor of Kingstown. He’s done single episodes of Luke Cage, Accused, and Alaska Daily. The films he has directed include Percy V. Goliath with Christopher Walken and Christina Ricci, Juanita with Alfre Woodard, the S.W.A.T. movie adaptation starring Samuel L. Jackson and Colin Farrell, where he appeared as “Deke's handsome partner” and The Sentinel starring Michael Douglas and Kiefer Sutherland.
Daredevil: Born Again is created and written by series executive producers Matt Corman and Chris Ord, who are striking. The other EPs are Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, and Chris Gary.
