'Daredevil: Born Again' Finds New Showrunner And Directors
These talents already have Marvel TV experience
In the midst of Daredvil: Born Again’s creative overhaul for Marvel Studios, it's now been revealed publicly some of the personnel who will be helping guide the show going forward.
Dario Scardapane, whose work includes executive producing The Punisher, the Marvel Netflix series spun off from the three-year 2015-2018 Daredevil series where star Charlie Cox began in the role of blind lawyer Matt Murdock, the titular hero, has been named as the new showrunner. At the time the overhaul was reported, Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, television and animation remarked “We’re trying to marry the Marvel culture with the traditional television culture. It comes down to, ‘How can we tell stories in television that honor what’s so great about the source material?’” Bringing the full powers of show runners into the fold, as writers had bargained for through their 148 day strike “It’s a term we’ve not only grown comfortable with but also learned to embrace.” Writers teach good lessons.
Directing duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s work in independent genre thrillers landed them the gig of directing half of Loki’s currently-running second season, consisting of the season premiere “Ouroboros”, Thursday's episode “The Heart of the TVA”, and the next two episodes that finish the season out. Prior to that they also directed two episodes of last year's Moon Knight miniseries starring Oscar Isaac, “Summon the Suit” and “The Tomb”. Now they're being tasked with the remainder of this series’s first season.
How much is unclear with the footage excising of the “less than half” of the season made with the previous vision at the time production caught up with the striking writers and shut down. Head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman were quietly moved to executive producer roles after the footage review as Marvel headed in this new direction. Reportedly it’s away from the legal procedural Ord and Corman crafted and toward something tonally like the first series. The season at hand was originally set to be 18 episodes. According to filings at the United States Copyright Office, they're aiming for a January 2025 premiere.
