'Dune' Actress Siân Phillips To Appear In Upcoming 'Doctor Who' Season
Also, get ready for Easter, when a new trailer will likely reveal (the rest of) series 14’s episode titles
There are only six weeks until Doctor Who returns for its fourteenth series, and first season on Disney+, with eight brand new episodes, kicked off by two aired together. Some revealed actors don’t quite have their roles revealed yet, and now there’s another to add to that list. Dame Siân Phillips has been cast in the series, which is also the first to star Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor.
Executive producer Phil Collinson revealed such in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, telling them “Sometimes we’re so lucky to open the studio doors to an absolute legend. I think a shiver went through the whole production team when we welcomed in Dame Siân Phillips…This is a proper joy and an honour. It’s amazing that Siân hasn’t been in Doctor Who before – she said, ‘I’ve been waiting to be asked!"
Seemingly best known for starring in the 1976 adaptation of I, Claudius with (eventual) Master Derek Jacobi, War Doctor John Hurt, and King Yrcanos Brian Blessed, she might be most familiar to American audiences for her roles as Cassiopeia in Clash of the Titans and Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam in the 1984 version of Dune. She also appeared in Ewoks: The Battle for Endor as Charal and played Mrs. Archer in The Age of Innocence. Her early career was very stage-heavy, and recently appeared in an episode of Good Omens. Talking about being brought on, Phillips said “I was absolutely thrilled. The show is such a loved British drama and it means so much to so many people, so to be able to be part of this is just wonderful."
Elsewhere, the BBC end of the show’s socials confirmed that a new trailer will be released on Easter Sunday, and that all eight episode titles will be released. It is unclear whether these are two separate items or, like at last Eurovision with the 60th anniversary specials, it’s a trailer revealing the episode titles, which is very very likely. Heck, while “The Devil’s Chord” has been known to be the second episode, one featuring The Beatles for quite some time, but it will definitely reveal the seven surrounding it. The fourteenth series season 1 will premiere on BBC iPlayer at midnight UK time on May 11, with a simultaneous release on Disney+ everywhere else, which is 4-7 PM on Friday, May 10 across the contiguous United States’s four time zones. Of course, I’ll be covering the title trailer, there’s even already an article title drafted. See you then.
