'The Flash' Director Andy Muschietti Is Confirmed To Direct DCU Batman Film 'Brave and the Bold'
Muschietti is the third confirmed director for the new slate of films at DC Studios
Two weeks ago, One Take News reported they had confirmed that The Flash director Andy Muschietti will helm a part of the new DC Universe, directing the Batman movie Brave and the Bold. On Thursday, Variety reconfirmed it as their alleged “exclusive”.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, who will be directing Superman: Legacy, has been extra gushy about Muschietti’s work and the film as a whole. When Muschietti was doing Canadian press for The Flash, Narcity asked him what he would do if he had his own Batman film and he responded, “I don’t think I can talk to that yet”.
In confirming the news, Gunn and fellow co-CEO Peter Safran stated they saw The Flash before taking their positions at DC Studios, and were so impressed, calling him a visionary director but a massive DC fan,” They continued, praising Muschietti’s affinity and passion for the characters and this world just resonates through every frame. So, when it came time to find a director for The Brave and the Bold, there was really only one choice. Luckily, Andy said yes. Barbara signed on to produce with us and we were on our way. They’re an extraordinary team, and we couldn’t have better or more inspiring partners as we embark on this thrilling new adventure in the DCU.”
There’s still no writer attached, but the film will be the first live-action film appearance for any holder of the Robin mantle since Chris O’Donnell’s Dick Grayson’s second and final appearance in Batman & Robin. However, this will also be the live-action debut of Damian Wayne, instead of another go-round for Dick Grayson, or any for Jason Todd, Tim Drake, or even Carrie Kelley. It is one of ten projects announced for the first chapter of the new DC Universe, “Gods & Monsters” with the other films being Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the James Mangold-directed Swamp Thing, and The Authority.
Muschietti came to The Flash having done both chapters of It, from New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. starring Bill Skarsgard and Jessica Chastain. His star-making film was 2013 horror film Mama, also starring Chastain. He has also been deep in work on Max’s It prequel series Welcome to Derry, set for release next year.
