'Loki' EP And Director Kate Herron Is The Co-Writer Of An Upcoming 'Doctor Who' Episode
All indications say it’s a series 14 episode
As Doctor Who began production on series 15, Ncuti Gatwa’s second series as the Fifteenth Doctor Monday, the franchise announced Tuesday that the still-upcoming fourteenth series will have a co-written episode from non-regulars in the franchise. Not only does one in the pair have familiarity to American audiences, but she also has a past with Gatwa.
The pairing has been revealed to be duo Kate Herron and Briony Redman. Together, they’ve written the comic The Storkening as well as the sci-fi television series Miss Universe and short film Smear. Apart, Herron is probably best known as having been an executive producer and the director for all six episodes of the first season of Marvel Studios’s Loki. She also comes in having worked with Ncuti Gatwa, having directed the back four episodes of the first series of Sex Education, the Netflix series he was best known for when he was cast and which ended last month after 4 series and 32 episodes. Redman is an actor and comedian whose work apart from Herron includes the Welsh crime-comedy Pont Brec and award-winning short film Forget-Me-Not.
Putting in their statements about this grand opportunity to team up for "an unforgettable adventure", Herron said "Clearly I can’t get enough of time travel. It is an absolute honour to write for Russell and Ncuti. We had so much fun and can’t wait for you all to see it." while Redman chimed in with “As a big fan of Doctor Who and Russell T Davies, it’s been a dream to write on this show.”
Davies himself, who has returned as showrunner having shepherded the first four revival series that aired from 2005 to New Year’s Day 2010, remarks on his own joys and fandom: “This is when I absolutely love my job. Working with the stellar talents of Kate and Briony makes my whole world bigger and brighter, and a lot more fun. I was a huge fan of Loki and reached out to Kate to say so - she then introduced me to Briony, and it was all systems go! They've written a wonderful script which created unique challenges for cast and crew alike. The end result is gorgeous and thrilling and scary, and not like any other episode of Doctor Who.”
Gatwa’s first appearance as the Fifteenth Doctor is expected to be at the end of the third 60th anniversary special “The Giggle” following Fourteenth Doctor David Tennant’s regeneration, which airs next month. Fifteen’s first adventure will be the Christmas special, airing on Christmas Day. Series 14 is still on for spring and will be Fifteen’s first regular episodes, and Doctor Who’s since fall 2021. It is very possible viewers will see Herron and Redman on the companion behind-the-scenes series Doctor Who Unleashed when their episode airs.
