Max Closes 'Clone High' Revival After 2 Seasons
Nothing bad ever happens AGAIN to the clones! The cult classic animated series revival 20 years in the making has ended.
School’s out on another cliffhanger…forever?! Another 20 years? Max has canceled their revival of Clone High after two seasons, opting not to proceed beyond the initial pickup from back in July 2020.
“Although Max will not proceed with a third season of Clone High, we will always cherish our creative partnership with Chris Miller, Phil Lord, Bill Lawrence, Erica Rivinoja, Erik Durbin, Judah Miller, Corey Campodonico, Alex Bulkley, and the team at MTV Entertainment Studios,” reads the streamer’s released statement. “The incredibly talented voice actors, writers, cast and crew provided the opportunity to thaw out these legendary characters.” While the revival’s first season would end up a Max relaunch title following the rebrand from HBO Max in May 2023 and roll out two episodes weekly, the second season didn’t get nearly enough fanfare as they opted for a binge drop this past February.
Michael Culbertson, a production assistant on the series according to IMDb, seems to have been the first crew member to speak on the cancellation, tweeting “For once, I didn’t learn bad news on the internet first! It’s something we’ve known for quite a while now.” which he followed up with we’re all super proud of the work we did and my fondest career memories still lie with the Clone High team. Our talents have spread onto other projects and I can’t wait to talk more about them and show my love when the time comes :)” In between he described putting together a joke epilogue regarding still-frozen and controversial character Gandhi, which was included in the first tweet.
Clone High was created by Lawrence, Lord and Miller, and followed high school-aged clones of major historical figures including Abraham Lincoln, Joan of Arc and John F. Kennedy, a parody of the primetime teen soaps at the time of its 2002 premiere, including Dawson’s Creek. It stars Nicole Sullivan as Joan; Will Forte as Abe; with Lord as Scudworth and Miller as JFK and Mr. B, and Mitra Jouhari as Cleo; Christa Miller, Cleo’s original voice, moved into the role of Candide Sampson; newcomers included Vicci Martinez as Frida Kahlo, Ayo Edebiri as Harriet Tubman, Kelvin Yu as Confucius, Neil Casey as Topher Bus, the Christopher Columbus clone, while more recurring returnees included Donald Faison as George Washington Carver and Judah Miller as Scangrade.
