Nickelodeon Sets Premiere Date For Newest Nicktoon 'Rock Paper Scissors'
While some full, post-pilot episodes have made it to YouTube and VOD, the show is making its linear debut in February
And shoot! We now know where in the first quarter of 2024 Nickelodeon is premiering its next Nicktoon Rock Paper Scissors. Described as “inspired by the age-old tradition of settling things with your best friends”, the new animated series, the first pickup from the Intergalactic Shorts program, will premiere on February 12, 2024.
The series will apparently be premiering its episodes as part of the network’s AfterToons block, given a 5:30 PM timeslot that it will continue to premiere episodes in for the immediate future. The show’s international premiere will occur later in the month. Best friends Rock, Paper, and Scissors get up to all sorts of shenanigans as highly competitive roommates over practically anything. There will be global games of extreme hide-and-seek, birthday police, alien invasions, face offs with brother rats and training some eerily familiar tortoises.
Rock Paper Scissors stars Ron Funches as Rock, who has the biggest heart and moral compass, as well as modeling aspirations; Thomas Lennon as Paper, the self-proclaimed “smart guy” of the group who wants an inventor, but whose product at this stage tends to explode; and Carlos Alazraqui as Scissors, the overly confident wannabe cool guy. His ego is what’s credited as the main source of chaos. There’s also Melissa Villaseñor as Pencil, the genuinely very smart neighbor in their building and Eddie Pepitone as Lou, the angry garbage can who serves as their landlord. Its first season order was for 20 episodes. It and its preceding shorts were created, written, and executive produced by Kyle Stegina and Josh Lehrman. They previously created Bizaardvark together for Disney Channel and co-produced and wrote for Paradise PD and Robot Chicken. DreamWorks and Sausage Party alum Conrad Vernon and The Fairly OddParents’ Bob Boyle, who created Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! and Ying Yang Yo! serve as the series’s executive producers.
In the leadup to the premiere, Nickelodeon has already posted not only the pilot to the Nicktoons YouTube channel but at least the first pairing of “Birthday Police” and “Paper’s Big Lie”, and a plethora of clips. There’s also the special preview on Christmas Day Monday during halftime of the NFL Nickmas Game, which the press release confirms will be the Intergalactic Short “TV Time”. The short sees the trio start off fighting about what to watch on TV to starring in a Broadway musical. Interestingly, premiere day is the day after Super Bowl LVIII, which Nickelodeon is giving its own unique simulcast. It’s sure to get a lot of promotion during the broadcast, hopefully if there’s another halftime special preview it’s used with something else. For the variety.
