Nickelodeon Renews 'Rock Paper Scissors' For Two Seasons Equaling First’s Length
Bunches more of Funches and the gang
As fans await news on The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish after its first half of its first season made its crucial future-deciding arrival to Netflix in November, followed by its full-season drop on Paramount+ in March, they can be assured there’s at least some health at Nickelodeon, both the network and the animation studio. The network has announced that Rock Paper Scissors, last year’s first new Nicktoon, has been renewed for second and third seasons. The first season will make its own Paramount+ arrival on Wednesday, May 28.
At launch, Rock Paper Scissors was the #1 new animated series for the Kids 2-11 and 6-11 demographics. It should be emphasized that instead of being 20 episodes each like the first season, these are 20 episodes split across both seasons. Definitely not the practice one is looking for but it’s better than nothing. The ten-episode second season premieres in the fall domestically but won’t start international rollout until 2026. In addition, Nickelodeon has greenlit 20 one-minute shorts for even more hijinks, even if just in short-form. They will debut across Nickelodeon’s “ecosystem”, presumably the linear networks, YouTube channels, and social media pages, later this year.
Nickelodeon Sets Premiere Date For Newest Nicktoon 'Rock Paper Scissors'
And shoot! We now know where in the first quarter of 2024 Nickelodeon is premiering its next Nicktoon Rock Paper Scissors. Described as “inspired by the age-old tradition of settling things with your best friends”, the new animated series, the first pickup from the Intergalactic Shorts program, will premiere on February 12, 2024.
Rock Paper Scissors stars Ron Funches as Rock, who has the biggest heart and moral compass, as well as modeling aspirations; Thomas Lennon as Paper, the self-proclaimed “smart guy” of the group who wants an inventor, but whose product at this stage tends to explode; and Carlos Alazraqui as Scissors, the overly confident wannabe cool guy. They are “a trio of best friends and roommates who lovingly compete over everything in sometimes laughable but mostly wildly absurd ways”. There’s also Melissa Villaseñor as Pencil, the genuinely very smart neighbor in their building and Eddie Pepitone as Lou, the angry garbage can who serves as their landlord.
“Rock Paper Scissors embodies the creative and character-driven storytelling we champion at Nickelodeon and the show’s humor and heart has struck a chord with our audience,” said Ramsey Naito, who is President of Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation. “With an all-star cast that brings incredible energy, humor and depth to every character, we can’t wait to dive even deeper into the hilarious world these three best friends share.”
The series is created, written, and executive produced by Kyle Stegina and Josh Lehrman, who previously created Bizaardvark together for Disney Channel and co-produced and wrote for Paradise PD and Robot Chicken. DreamWorks alum Conrad Vernon and The Fairly OddParents’ Bob Boyle, who created Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! and Ying Yang Yo! serve as the series’s executive producers.
