Watch The 'Pokémon Horizons' Dub's Trailer And Take A Sneak Peek At The First Ten Minutes
The future of the Pokémon anime is almost here
The Pokémon anime’s first ever San Diego Comic-Con panel was not just about the dub of the final part of Ultimate Journeys, titled To Be A Pokémon Master, concluding the journey of Ash Ketchum, but the future beyond. While Pokémon Horizons was first acknowledged simultaneously with Japan when the future was announced in December, but this was the first time the dub itself was at hand.
The trailer starts with some of the world of Pokémon, and a lot of Liko, with her “awe-inspiring pendant,” at Indigo Academy and getting her Sprigatito, something seen in the original previews. Roy with his mysterious, ancient, Shiny Rayquaza-containing Poké Ball, sounds Goh-like, but it’s actually the Fuecoco he befriends and catches that is voiced by Zeno Robinson. Roy is actually voiced by Anjali Kunapaneni, while Liko is voiced by Alejandra Reynoso. Sixteen seconds are dedicated to the conflict between the Rising Volt Tacklers and the Explorers before Liko and Roy find each other. In addition, the first half of the first episode, minus intro and titles, has been released dubbed. And the first voice we hear is a surprising one: Instead of Ken Gates as narrator, who had only ever not been narrator for about 120 episodes of Ash’s journey, we hear Steve Blum! Best known for Cowboy Bebop, Naruto, Digimon, Star Wars Rebels, The Legend of Korra and as TOM on Toonami, he is Pokémon’s new narrator. And what a voice to guide us. Sarah Natochenny, the longer and most recent of Ash’s voice actors, confirmed so.
Liko’s Sprigatito, who seems to be doing regular meows, will be voiced by Kira Buckland. Daman Mills, who is most known for his dub work at Funimation which has been an accruement of dozens of series, will voice Dot (Nidothing)’s Quaxly and Explorers admin Amethio. Dot herself will be voiced by Faye Mata. Lisa Ortiz will continue as voice director, as well as voicing Oshawott, as she voiced Ash’s in one of her biggest roles after returning to the anime. This time, the Oshawott belongs to Liko’s Indigo Academy roommate and friend Ann, who is voiced by Xanthe Huynh. Her biggest role in the franchise prior to this was as Celadon Gym Leader Erika. She and Buckland also come well experienced in anime and video games. If you thought those were good gets, wait until you hear this: Crispin Freeman is voicing Friede. Freeman is another of anime’s most prolific voice actors, and in American animation voiced Electro in The Spectacular Spider-Man, Arsenal/Red Arrow on Young Justice, and Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’s Scott Lang Ant-Man, among other roles. Natochenny also confirmed she’s staying with the series, but her role has not been disclosed yet. And of course, Captain Pikachu retains Ikue Otani. Michele Knotz, who voiced Jessie from the cast turnover to the end of Ash’s journey does not seem to have a regular role in the new series just yet.
Pokémon Horizons: The Series is officially coming soon. However due to the anime’s quarterly releases on Netflix for United States audiences and the September 8 release of To Be A Pokémon Master, a December release just in time for Christmas is expected and presumed. It is unknown how much of a jump Canada will have, as they finish up Ash’s journey this weekend, but Horizons has yet to show up on their TV listings as of writing. The series premiered in Japan in April, and as of writing 14 episodes have aired.
