Prime Video, MGM+ Order Spider-Man Noir Series 'Noir', Nicolas Cage To Star
Probably not what you expected for Nicolas Cage’s first television series, but now that Rubik's Cube is solved
It's time to drink egg creams and punch Nazis. Nicolas Cage is officially set to star in Noir, the live-action Spider-Man Noir series that Prime Video and MGM+ announced they ordered at their upfront Tuesday.
The series will debut domestically on MGM+’s linear channel followed by a global launch on Prime Video. Development was first reported in February 2023. Of course, Cage first voiced a Peter Parker-based version of Spider-Man Noir in Sony Pictures Animation’s Best Animated Feature Oscar-winning 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. While he was absent for the sequel, a silent cameo appearance from Noir in the film’s ending implied he’ll be back for the next film Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Even as of today’s reports, there’s no mention of a pivot back to Noir starring a Peter Parker variant. It will tell the story “of an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”
For Cage, who won a Best Actor Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas and was nominated again for Adaptation, as far as narrative television goes, he’s only ever done one pilot, and that was at the very start of his career. He’s hosted Saturday Night Live twice and Netflix’s History of Swear Words, but that’s basically it. His other filmography includes Moonstruck, Raising Arizona, Face/Off, Con Air, and the National Treasure and Ghost Rider films. His casting as Superman for the infamously unmade Superman Lives led to such nods being made by casting him as Superman for Teen Titans Go! To the Movies and less tactfully for last summer’s The Flash. Lately, he’s also been in Pig, Willy’s Wonderland, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and Dream Scenario.
“Expanding the Marvel universe with Noir is a uniquely special opportunity and we are honored to bring this series to our global Prime Video customers,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon MGM Studios. “The extremely talented Nicolas Cage is an ideal choice for our new superhero and the accomplished producing team with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, and the incredible team at Sony is dedicated to expanding this franchise in the most authentic way.”
“We are absolutely thrilled to have Nicolas Cage starring in this series! No one else could bring such pathos, pain, and heart to this singular character,” said Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios. “Along with our brilliant producers and partners at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, we couldn’t ask for a better team to explore this reimagining of such an iconic character in Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.”
The show comes from Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, who developed the series with Lord and Miller under their overall deal at Sony, and Pascal, all attaining executive producer status but only the first pair will be co-showrunners. Pascal executive produces via Pascal Pictures. Harry Bradbeer will executive produce as well and direct the first two episodes. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. It is Sony Pictures Television’s second greenlit series with this agreement after Silk: Spider-Society as Sony itself utilizes the television rights they have to Spider-Man characters for the first time since losing animation (and half hour series?) to Disney during or after The Spectacular Spider-Man.
