'Scooby-Doo! and Krypto, Too!' Trailer Released; Release Date Confirmed
It was never written off and anyone who believes otherwise is gullible
Back in March when Sandler’s Handlings was starting I made blatant references to reviewing a movie. That movie was the latest direct-to-video Scooby-Doo! romp Scooby-Doo! and Krypto, Too! which had leaked around that time under the false pretense that it had been the victim of Warner Bros. Discovery’s tax writeoffs. The review never happened because Warner Bros. had gotten it all down before it could happen. Now, after being teased yesterday by Warner Bros. Entertainment, the trailer for the film has been released, with release dates, cast, crew, and retail information revealed.
In Mystery Incorporated’s latest foray into the DC Universe, the Justice League have mysteriously vanished and a terrifying phantom has now occupied the Hall of Justice. So Scooby and the gang must solve the mystery and save the heroes, by teaming up with Superman’s canine companion Krypto the Superdog. The main Mystery Inc. quartet is still intact, with Frank Welker as Scooby-Doo and Fred Jones, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy Rogers, Kate Micucci as Velma Dinkley and Grey Griffin as Daphne Blake. Griffin is part of the DC side of the cast as well, voicing Wonder Woman. The cast also includes Nolan North as Superman and the Joker, Charles Halford as Lex Luthor, James Arnold Taylor as Jimmy Olsen and presumed Lex pet Rex Ruthor, Tara Strong as Lois Lane, Harley Quinn, and Helen, Victoria Grace as Mercy Graves, Fred Tatasciore as Solomon Grundy and Perry White, P.J. Byrne as J.B., and Niccole Thurman as Mayor Fleming.
While Joker and Harley are around with Grundy, the Phantom Zone escapees and Giganta to plunge Metropolis to Gotham City lows, the cast of the Justice League aside from Supes and Wonder Woman but including what would be the fourth onscreen Batman they would encounter, has not been confirmed. That is, if they even get lines before, during, or upon their rescue. The Scooby-Doo Team Up comic series ran 50 issues and exclusively teamed the Mystery Inc. gang with DC heroes. Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? not only featured Kevin Conroy’s DCAU-looking Batman as the third Batman encounter, but Justice League Action’s Rachel Kimsey’s Wonder Woman and a Charlie Schlatter-voiced Barry Allen Flash (the one he originated on Superman The Animated Series turned out to be a Wally West).
The dropping of Scooby-Doo! and the Mystery Pups from development for Cartoonito and another DTV movie starring the Hex Girls being the one that actually did fall victim to such led to much of the panic. In regards to overpresumptuous fans who believed this film had been written off, Jen Hurler, who works animation development at Warner Bros. Animation had this gentle reminder after debunking a perpetuation of such falsity.
“Just because you don’t hear about a project for a long time doesn’t mean that it was canceled. I understand given the current atmosphere that’s where a person would logically go, but you shouldn’t if your source is some random fan. I argue if it’s been a long time since you heard about a project at any tv studio, and it hasn’t been canceled there’s a good chance that they’re trying to shop it other places. Can’t imagine pirating would help there.”
Of course, she’s right. It’s nearly a year since the massacre, and the six projects that stopped development, only two have found a home: Batman: Caped Crusader and Merry Little Batman took seven and nine months. At Annecy last month, one of those projects, Looney Tunes: The Day the Earth Blew Up, was announced to have been renamed Bubble Brains, even while it hasn’t landed at a new home.
Scooby-Doo! and Krypto, Too! is directed by Cecilia Aranovich Hamilton from a script by T.K. O'Brian. Rick Morales and franchise mainstay Jim Krieg are the producers and Sam Register is Executive Producer. The film will will be available on September 26, 2023 to purchase digitally from your typical digital marketplaces in the US and Canada. At that point for those in the US, the DVD release will be Walmart-exclusive.
