It’s Star Wars’s first open-world game! May the course be with you.
Only a rapscallion deals in absolute craving of adventure and excitement. Oh no wait, gamers do too. Lucasfilm Games and Ubisoft have released the story trailer for Star Wars Outlaws, the first open-world Star Wars game, and announced an August 30 release date on on Xbox Series X|S consoles, PlayStation 5, Amazon Luna and PC through Ubisoft Connect.
The game’s story focuses on “cunning scoundrel” Kay Vess, played by Humberly González and her partner, a creature named Nix (Dee Bradley Baker)’s search for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. As the synopsis describes: “During this era, the Empire’s rule is distracted by the rebellion that won’t quit, leading to a golden age for the underworld. As a skilled thief, Kay’s antics catch the attention of Sliro, the leader of a new, foreboding criminal syndicate Zerek Besh. After Sliro places a bounty on her head, Kay and Nix are offered their one shot at freedom — pull off one of the greatest heists of all time. The duo will need to navigate the underworld across the galaxy, building their reputation with legendary criminal organizations including the Pyke Syndicate, the Hutt Cartel, the Ashiga Clan and Crimson Dawn to earn the support they need to finish the job.”
Kay and Nix are looking to pull off the ultimate heist, traveling the galaxy to accrue the necessary resources and crew. Their travels will take them to new and familiar locations including Canto Bight, Kijimi, Tatooine, Akiva, the windswept savannah of Toshara and the bustling cities and cantinas found there. Kay will race across “sprawling outdoor landscapes” on her speeder, and pilot the Trailblazer, her spaceship, which will also help them chase, evade and attack to gain the advantage in thrilling dogfights with foes including the daunting and powerful forces of the Empire. It takes place in the year between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
The game’s creative director, Julian Gerighty, describes so “In search of true freedom, the resourceful Kay and Nix will journey through the underworld and across the Outer Rim, taking on jobs from syndicates, facing off against intimidating foes, avoiding oppressive Imperial rule and recruiting a skilled outlaw crew in order to pull off one of the greatest heists the galaxy has ever seen.”
At a suggested retail price of $70, Ubisoft+ subscribers or buyers of the Gold or Ultimate Editions of the game receive three days early access. Those who preorder will get the “Kessel Runner Bonus Pack” which includes skins for the Trailblazer and Kay’s speeder. It has also been confirmed that Lady Qi’ra, introduced in Solo: A Star Wars Story and played there by Emilia Clarke, will be appearing in the game, but without Clarke reprising the role.
