DC Universe Film 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow' Finds Its Writer
Sasha Calle might not be carried over to the new film universe, but the writer apparently has
The new DC Universe from DC Studios has caught a familiar writer for the fourth film of its debut “Gods & Monsters” chapter, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Ana Nogueira, a writer, actress and playwright whose credits include a stint on The Vampire Diaries, while having acting credits that include The Michael J. Fox Show and The Blacklist, has been tapped to write the film, starring Supergirl, Superman’s cousin from Krypton, whose real name is Kara Zor-El. Her Earth name tends to vary from one interpretation to another. Notably, this is actually a change of universes for Nogueira, as she previously worked on a Supergirl movie in 2022 for the DC Extended Universe starring Sasha Calle following her debut in The Flash, which was in post-production at the time. The decision to reboot for this new universe put the kibosh to that. That version, at least. Studio heads James Gunn and Peter Safran liked the work Nogueira had done with the previous iteration brought her back as quietly as she was assigned in the first place. Such came with giving her an overall DC writing deal.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow adapts a comic book mini-series written by Tom King that was published in 2021 and 2022. This Kara is jaded from experiencing Krypton’s destruction at a much younger age, and has been raised on a piece of Krypton’s remains while everyone died around her. She and Krypto the Superdog get caught up in a different young alien girl’s revenge quest across the galaxy. An exact plot has not been disclosed…for much of any of the movies frankly.
Nogueira’s play Which Way to the Stage had an off-Broadway debut in 2022. Up next, she is working on an adaptation of Alice Sola Kim’s short story Mothers, Lock Up Your Daughters, set up at Warner Bros. with 21 Laps producing. This writer pickup comes as Gunn’s writing and directing effort Superman: Legacy reaffirms its July 11, 2025 release date as the strikes came to a close, leading off the slate. The film has already announced five cast members and more waiting, while The Brave and the Bold and Swamp Thing found their directors in Andy Muschietti and James Mangold. The second film in the slate is The Authority, which hasn't had much revealed since the initial announcement. It’s Swamp Thing set to wrap the chapter up.
In his public welcoming of Nogueira, Gunn calls her an “amazing writer”, whose screenplay goes “above and beyond anything” he hoped it would be. He shares his excitement in progress on the “unique” take on Supergirl in a “star-spanning” story.
